Gratitude Pokémon · Grass-type

![Shaymin official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/492.webp)

Shaymin is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)-type Pokémon, the Gratitude Pokémon, number 492 (#0492) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 2.1 kg.

Shaymin is the Gratitude Pokémon, a small hedgehog-like Grass type that can turn ruined land into a field of flowers. Feelings of thanks make it bloom, and the Pokédex says the blooming of Gracidea flowers gives it the power of flight.

## How to pronounce Shaymin

Shaymin is pronounced **SHAY-min**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

In its Land Forme, Shaymin is a small white hedgehog, 0.2 m tall and 2.1 kg, with grassy green fur along its back and a pink flower flanked by leaves on its head. More flowers open on its back when it feels comfortable, Bulbapedia says. The Pokédex says it can neutralise the toxins in the air, turning ravaged land into a thick field of blossoms, and that the flowers on its body burst open when it is hugged affectionately and feels gratitude.

### Behaviour

Land Forme Shaymin is shy and easily scared. The Diamond Pokédex says it escapes notice by rolling itself up and passing for a flowering plant. Bulbapedia adds that herds gather each season in a flower field and then migrate, with a new field of flowers growing wherever they land, and that Shaymin is drawn to places full of gratitude.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in flower patches. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives through Pokémon HOME, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

Bulbapedia says it appears to favour sweet food.

### Powers

Its Ability Natural Cure heals a status condition when it switches out. Exposed to a Gracidea in the daytime it becomes Sky Forme, a Grass and Flying type with the Ability Serene Grace, 0.4 m tall and 5.2 kg, trading defence for offence (Attack 103, Special Attack 120, Speed 127, Defense and Special Defense 75). It reverts at night or when frozen. Bulbapedia says Seed Flare is exclusive to Shaymin, which Shaymin gets at level 100.

### Name origin

Shaymin appears to come from xièxie (謝謝), Chinese for 'thanks', and may also draw on the Japanese harinezumi ('hedgehog') and the Hebrew Shamayim ('heaven'), which suits Sky Forme. The Japanese name is シェイミ (Sheimi), which the games write Shaymin in Latin letters.

### Design inspiration

Land Forme is modelled on a hedgehog, and its white body with grassy fur may also recall a Chia Pet. Bulbapedia says its flower resembles a Gracidea and may be based on a hydrangea, while Sky Forme's antler-like shapes could nod to reindeer and its scarf and confident manner to Japanese sentai superheroes. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Shaymin is an event Pokémon: Land Forme debuted in Diamond and Pearl and Sky Forme in Platinum. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl it waits in Flower Paradise, which needs Oak's Letter, and in Legends: Arceus it is at Floaro Gardens in the Obsidian Fieldlands.

### In the anime

Shaymin debuted in the film 'Giratina and the Sky Warrior', fleeing Giratina, who wanted its Seed Flare to tear open a gateway out of the Reverse World. Mallow's Shaymin arrived in 'Memories in the Mist!' and became Sky Forme in 'Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!'.

### Fun facts

- In HeartGold and SoulSilver, a Shaymin walking with the player has a unique animation for changing into Land Forme when the time turns to night.
- Legends: Arceus asks for a Sword or Shield save file before it lets you catch Shaymin, even though neither game offers Shaymin.
- Sky Forme is the sole Flying-type Mythical Pokémon, not counting Arceus holding a Sky Plate.
- From Generation IV to Generation VI, Sky Forme could not be used in Battle Spot or Mythical-friendly online battles, because storing it in the PC reverted it to Land Forme.
