![Shelgon official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/372.webp)

Shelgon is a [Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)-type Pokémon, the Endurance Pokémon, number 372 (#0372) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 110.5 kg.

Shelgon is the Endurance Pokémon, a Dragon type shut inside a heavy shell while its body rebuilds itself. The Pokédex says it neither eats nor drinks during the change, and why it survives is not known.

## How to pronounce Shelgon

Shelgon is pronounced **SHEL-gon**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Shelgon is a six-plated white shell made of a bone-like substance, with two hexagonal openings showing its grey body and yellow eyes, and four stubby legs with red stripes. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 110.5 kg. The shell repels most attacks, but its weight makes Shelgon extremely sluggish.

### Behaviour

Shelgon hides motionless in caverns, waiting to evolve and dreaming of flight. The Shield Pokédex says it will apparently evolve once all its stored energy is used up. Underneath, its cells are changing at a bewildering pace, and the shell peels off the instant evolution begins. Bulbapedia notes that in the Sleep Style Dex it sleeps with its legs out, as if dreaming of flying.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says Shelgon lurks deep within caves. In Scarlet and Violet it is a Violet version wild spawn in Alfornada Cavern and North Province (Scarlet players trade for it). In Legends: Z-A it comes from evolving Bagon, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds wild ones in Hyperspace Lumiose.

### Powers

Rock Head is its regular Ability, and Overcoat, hidden, protects it from weather damage. It learns Crunch, Dragon Claw, Zen Headbutt and Flamethrower by level, with Outrage at level 60. Its base Attack of 95 is respectable for a creature that barely moves.

### Name origin

Shelgon may combine 'shell' and 'dragon'. The Japanese name is Komoruu (コモルー), perhaps from komoru ('to seclude oneself') and ryū ('dragon').

### Design inspiration

Shelgon appears to mix a dragon or giant tortoise with a pupa. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Shelgon evolves from Bagon at level 30 and into Salamence at level 50.

### In the games

Shelgon is the cocoon stage of the Bagon line, introduced in Ruby and Sapphire. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles.

### In the anime

In 'Vanity Affair', Hoenn Elite Four member Drake's Shelgon beat Ash's Pikachu using Dragon Breath and Dragon Claw because Ash overlooked its high Defense. Sawyer's Shelgon lost to Ash's Hawlucha in 'A Meeting of Two Journeys!'.

### Fun facts

- Shelgon is heavier than the Salamence it becomes: 110.5 kg to 102.6 kg.
- Of the Dragon types introduced in Generation III, Shelgon has the highest base Defense, at 100.
- From Generation IV to VII, Shelgon could learn Iron Defense from a Move Tutor, but Salamence could not.
