Snail Pokémon · Bug-type

![Shelmet official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/616.webp)

Shelmet is a [Bug](https://pokee.si/types/bug)-type Pokémon, the Snail Pokémon, number 616 (#0616) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 7.7 kg.

Shelmet is the Snail Pokémon, a Bug type in a helmet-like shell that evolves only when it is traded for Karrablast, the very Pokémon that can pry its lid open. The Pokédex says the two evolve together for reasons nobody knows.

## How to pronounce Shelmet

Shelmet is pronounced **SHEL-mit**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Shelmet is a snail-like Pokémon, 0.4 m tall and 7.7 kg. Its grey shell is shaped like a knight's visor, and a spiral coils behind it, and protrusions underneath that it seems to use as legs. Its soft body is pink, and it has green marks under its eyes and a long mouth that looks puckered.

### Behaviour

When attacked, Shelmet shuts the lid of its shell tight, and the Black Pokédex says it can spit a sticky liquid that is poisonous. The defence does not work against Karrablast, which can still get inside. Bulbapedia calls Karrablast its rival and natural predator.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia says Shelmet thrives in moist places such as bogs and swamps.

### Powers

Shelmet's Abilities are Hydration, which cures status problems in rain, and Shell Armor, which blocks critical hits, with Overcoat hidden. It learns Acid Armor, Giga Drain, Bug Buzz and Final Gambit. Its Defence of 85 is its best stat, and its Speed of 25 is very slow.

### Name origin

Shelmet combines 'shell' and 'helmet'. The Japanese name is Chobomaki (チョボマキ), possibly from ochoboguchi ('puckered-up mouth') and makigai ('snail' or 'conch').

### Design inspiration

Tomohiro Kitakaze designed Shelmet. It appears to combine a snail, possibly the iron-shelled scaly-foot snail, with a close helmet, and its feud with Karrablast might nod to medieval drawings that joked about knights fighting giant snails. These are fan readings, not official statements.

### Evolution notes

Shelmet becomes Accelgor in a trade with a Karrablast, which turns into Escavalier at the same moment. If either holds an Everstone, neither evolves.

### In the games

In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Shelmet is a student in Serene Village's school, where it works as a lackey for the bully Pancham, with a crush on the nurse, Audino. It first appeared in Black and White and was catchable in Sword and Shield, but it is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Bianca's Shelmet debuted in 'Enter Elesa, Electrifying Gym Leader!', where it was quickly beaten by Elesa's Zebstrika. It evolved in 'Evolution Exchange Excitement!' after Bianca traded it with Professor Juniper for her Karrablast.

### Fun facts

- No other Pokémon needs a trade with one named species to evolve: Shelmet and Karrablast have to swap with each other.
- Escavalier gains a Steel type from its armour, yet Shelmet, which Bulbapedia says wears the same armour, is a pure Bug type.
- Bulbapedia notes that Shelmet shares its category, Snail Pokémon, with Hisuian Sliggoo.
- Bulbapedia says Shelmet and Accelgor are the only Bug types not based on arthropods.

It evolves when bathed in an electric-like energy along with Karrablast. The reason is still unknown. *(White, Y, Alpha Sapphire)*

When it and Karrablast are together, and both receive electrical stimulation, they both evolve. *(Black 2, White 2, X, Omega Ruby)*
