Shroomish is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)-type Pokémon, the Mushroom Pokémon, number 285 (#0285) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 4.5 kg.

Shroomish is the Mushroom Pokémon, a small Grass type that sits still in the forest shade by day and scatters toxic spores from its head the moment it senses danger. The Pokédex says the spores are strong enough to make trees and weeds wilt.

## How to pronounce Shroomish

## Lore

### Biology

Shroomish is 0.4 m tall and weighs 4.5 kg. Its beige upper body has frilled segments and a small opening on top, and its lower body is all green, with beady black eyes and small round feet. The Pokédex says the toxic spores it releases from its head cause pain all over if inhaled.

### Behaviour

Shroomish prefers damp places and holds very still in the forest shade by day. When danger comes it shakes itself and showers spores around. After a long rain, the Pokédex says, many feast together on composted soil.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in damp forest soil, deep where little light reaches. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South and West Provinces.

### Diet

The Pokédex says it eats compost made from fallen, rotted leaves.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Effect Spore, which can paralyse, poison or sleep a Pokémon that attacks it on contact, and Poison Heal, which turns poisoning into healing; the hidden Quick Feet speeds it up when it has a status condition. It spreads status with Stun Spore and Poison Powder, drains health with Leech Seed, and learns Spore at level 40. With 60 base Defense and 35 Speed it is sturdy but slow.

### Name origin

Shroomish may come from 'mushroom' plus the suffix -ish, or from 'skirmish' (a brief battle). The Japanese name is Kinococo (キノココ), which may combine kinoko (mushroom) with kodomo (child).

### Design inspiration

Shroomish looks like a mushroom, probably a puffball or earth star type. Bulbapedia adds that its round shape and Egg-like colours may also suggest a dinosaur egg, a fan reading.

### Evolution notes

Shroomish evolves into Breloom at level 23.

### In the games

In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, the Sapphire Field has three Shroomish working as bumpers near its top. The species debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, appears in 1-star Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet and is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

In 'Taming of the Shroomish', Ash and his friends help a group of Shroomish save their abandoned mansion home from being destroyed. In 'Promoting Healthy Tangrowth!', a Shroomish helps Tangrowth and others try to save a 1,000-year-old tree that has been damaged.

### Fun facts

- Before Generation V, Shroomish and Breloom were the only Pokémon known to have Poison Heal as an Ability.
- Shroomish shares the Mushroom Pokémon category with Breloom, Paras, Parasect, Foongus and Amoonguss; Bulbapedia notes all six also share Spore and Effect Spore.
- In 'Cheer Pressure', a Shroomish in Sheridan's cheering squad uses Helping Hand to tend James's Cacnea and Jessie's Seviper.
