Skorupi is a [Poison](https://pokee.si/types/poison)/[Bug](https://pokee.si/types/bug)-type Pokémon, the Scorpion Pokémon, number 451 (#0451) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 12 kg.

Skorupi is the Scorpion Pokémon, a desert ambusher that buries itself in sand and waits for prey to wander close. Then it locks on with its tail claws and does not let go until the poison works.

## Lore

### Biology

Skorupi is a pale purple, oversized scorpion, 0.8 m and 12 kg, with blue legs and small white claws near its teal eyes. Its real weapons are the pair of claws at the end of its tail, which grip prey and inject poison. The Pokédex says it shares a common ancestor with Sizzlipede.

### Behaviour

Skorupi waits patiently under the sand, then seizes prey with its tail claws and holds on tightly until the poison takes. The Pokédex warns that its claws are razor-sharp as well as poisonous, though it also notes that Skorupi seems to grow weaker in the cold.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in arid regions; Bulbapedia adds that it can also turn up in marshes, such as the Great Marsh. It is wild in Galar, in Sinnoh's Great Marsh in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and in Hisui in Legends: Arceus, but it is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

Its prey, caught with its tail claws; the Pokédex says it can survive a whole year without eating while it waits.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Battle Armor, which protects against critical hits, and Sniper, which makes its own critical hits hit harder; Keen Eye is hidden. It stings with Poison Sting, Fell Stinger and Cross Poison, lays Toxic Spikes and pinches with X-Scissor. Base Defense 90 is its best stat.

### Name origin

Skorupi appears to be a shortening of 'scorpion'. The Japanese name Scorupi (スコルピ) works the same way.

### Design inspiration

Skorupi is based on a scorpion, with a few features that recall the vinegarroon, a related arachnid. Bulbapedia suggests its Water 3 Egg Group may nod to sea scorpions, ancient sea-dwelling arthropods that could be ancestors of today's scorpions. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

It evolves into Drapion at level 40, and loses its Bug type in the process, becoming Poison and Dark.

### In the games

In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, a Skorupi is the local bully in the Special Episode 'Igglybuff the Prodigy', until Igglybuff wins him over with gifts. In the main series it first appeared in Diamond and Pearl, where it is found in the Great Marsh.

### In the anime

Aaron's Skorupi debuted in 'A Trainer and Child Reunion!' and is often seen out of its Poké Ball. In the Kalos story, Team Flare Grunts use several, including in 'Meeting at Terminus Cave!'.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Skorupi is the only Bug and Poison dual-type Pokémon with Poison listed first.
- Bulbapedia counts Skorupi and Drapion as the only Generation IV species with an insectoid body shape.
- In Pokémon Adventures, Platinum chases a Skorupi through the Great Marsh in 'A Skuffle with Skorupi', but it escapes.
