# Smeargle

Painter Pokémon · Normal-type

![Smeargle official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/235.webp)

Smeargle is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)-type Pokémon, the Painter Pokémon, number 235 (#0235) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 58 kg.

Smeargle is the Painter Pokémon, a beret-wearing beagle that marks its territory with paint from its tail. It is the only Pokémon that can learn Sketch, so in the games it can end up knowing almost any attack.

## How to pronounce Smeargle

## Lore

### Biology

Smeargle is a white and brown, beagle-like Pokémon, 1.2 m tall and 58 kg, with floppy brown ears, a beret-like round tuft and a long tail that ends in a paintbrush. The tail oozes a paint-like fluid whose colour is set for each Smeargle, and the Pokédex says its shade changes in intensity with its mood. A footprint on its back, usually the same colour, is placed there by other Smeargle as a sign of adulthood.

### Behaviour

Smeargle uses its tail to paint marks around town to claim territory, and the Pokédex says towns with many Smeargle end up covered in graffiti. The Ruby Pokédex says more than 5,000 different marks have been found. Fans of its work, the Pokédex says, pay big money for certain symbols.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia lists it among urban Pokémon. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or transfer and appears in The Indigo Disk's Savanna Biome among others, and it is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Smeargle has Own Tempo or Technician, with Moody hidden. Sketch lets it learn for good the last move its target used, with a few exceptions. Its stats are modest, with 75 Speed its best, so it relies on clever movesets. In Pokémon Pokopia the Decorator form, Smearguru, has a larger, multicoloured brush tail that makes many paint colours.

### Name origin

Smeargle may combine 'smear' and 'beagle'. The Japanese name is Doble (ドーブル), which may blend 'dog', 'daub', 'doodle' and the Spanish 'doble' ('double', for its copying), or 'double', 'Louvre' and 'poodle'.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Smeargle as part beagle, part painter: the brush-tipped tail is the obvious tool, the pointed tuft on its head works as a beret, and the paw print on its back is a stamp, which is a kind of art in itself. This is a fan reading.

### In the games

Smeargle joins your team in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon once you rescue it from Howling Forest, and it can change your base's flag. It debuted in Gold and Silver, living at the Ruins of Alph, and Pokopia's Smearguru is a supporting character who can recolour furniture.

### In the anime

Three Smeargle debuted in 'The Art of Pokémon' under Jack Pollockson, spreading his art by vandalising Whitestone. In 'Smashing with Sketch!' Ilima's Smeargle wins a Pokémon Ping-Pong tournament.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says its base stat total of 250 is the lowest of any Pokémon that cannot evolve.
- In Gold, Silver and Crystal its paint is red and its Shiny paint green, and Bulbapedia says Generation III onwards reverses that.
- In the Spaceworld '97 demo it appears to be an earlier design called Peintā, meaning 'painter'.
- Smeargle was the final Generation II species to reach Pokémon GO, arriving on 25 February 2019.
