![Sneasel official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/215.webp)

Sneasel is a [Dark](https://pokee.si/types/dark)/[Ice](https://pokee.si/types/ice)-type Pokémon, the Sharp Claw Pokémon, number 215 (#0215) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 28 kg.

Sneasel is the Sharp Claw Pokémon, a Dark and Ice type that slips into unguarded nests at night to steal eggs. Pairs sometimes team up, one luring the parents away, then fight each other over who gets to eat.

## How to pronounce Sneasel

## Lore

### Biology

Sneasel is a weasel-and-cat-like biped, 0.9 m (2 ft 11 in) tall and 28 kg (61.7 lb), with dark teal fur, three red tail feathers and one red feather on its left ear, shorter on females. Hooked white claws hide in its paws and feet, which it uses to climb trees and to startle enemies by suddenly extending them.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex calls Sneasel smart, sneaky and cunning, and says it hides in the dark to ambush prey. Breeders despise it and drive it away or even wipe it out.

### Habitat

It lives in forests. In Scarlet and Violet it lives on Glaseado Mountain and in Dalizapa Passage, around Kitakami's Oni Mountain, Chilling Waterhead and Timeless Woods, and in 3-star Tera Raids. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

It eats eggs stolen from nests, such as Pidgey's. The Pokédex says it pokes a hole in the shell and slurps out the inside.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Inner Focus and Keen Eye, with Pickpocket hidden. It learns Metal Claw, Icy Wind and Slash, plus Beat Up, its signature move before Generation IV. With 115 base Speed and 95 base Attack it is a fast, hard-hitting attacker. Hisuian Sneasel is a Fighting and Poison type with lavender fur and poison-tipped claws.

### Name origin

Sneasel may combine 'sneaky' and 'weasel', with a possible nod to 'sneeze' or the Scots sneesl ('to begin to rain or snow'). The Japanese name is Nyula (ニューラ), which may blend sennyū ('sneaking'), a cat's 'nyu' purr, itachi ('weasel') and tsurara ('icicle').

### Design inspiration

Hitoshi Ariga designed Hisuian Sneasel and Sneasler, according to Bulbapedia. The original seems to be a cross between a kamaitachi, a Japanese weasel spirit, and a cat, perhaps with a nod to the cat-sìth fairy cat. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Sneasel evolves into Weavile when it levels up at night while holding a Razor Claw. Hisuian Sneasel evolves into Sneasler instead, by levelling up in the daytime while carrying a Razor Claw.

### In the games

Hisuian Sneasel lives in Legends: Arceus, in the Coronet Highlands and Alabaster Icelands. Sneasel itself debuted in Gold and Silver.

### In the anime

Harrison's Sneasel made its TV debut in 'Pop Goes The Sneasel', guarding the way to the Flame of Ho-Oh before Harrison caught it. It later beat Ash's Pikachu, then lost to Totodile, in the Silver Conference.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Sneasel has the highest base Speed of any Pokémon that can still evolve.
- Of all Pokémon with a Hisuian form, Sneasel is the only one whose original form can also be found in Legends: Arceus.
- It is the only dual-type Pokémon whose dual-type regional form shares neither of its types.
