Tiny Bird Pokémon · Normal/Flying-type

![Spearow official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/21.webp)

Spearow is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Tiny Bird Pokémon, number 21 (#0021) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 2 kg.

Spearow is the Tiny Bird Pokémon, a bad-tempered Normal and Flying type that is too small to fly far but will take on much bigger Pokémon to defend its patch. Its shrill cry carries about a kilometre and warns the flock of danger.

## How to pronounce Spearow

Spearow is pronounced **SPEER-oh**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Spearow is 0.3 m tall and weighs 2 kg. It has rough brown plumage, narrow dark eyes with white pupils, a short hooked pink beak and pinkish-red wings with pale tips. Its wings are short, so it must flap them very fast to stay up, and the Pokédex calls it poor at flying high or far although quick over short distances.

### Behaviour

Spearow is fiercely protective of its territory, and the Pokédex says its reckless nature makes it stand up to large Pokémon when it has to. One Moon entry says farmers look after it because its appetite keeps bug Pokémon in check. Bulbapedia lists Ekans as a natural predator of Spearow.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is Rough Terrain, and Bulbapedia describes open, warm country, mainly wastelands and fields.

### Diet

It pecks insects out of tall grass; Bulbapedia adds that it preys on Sunkern.

### Powers

Its Ability is Keen Eye, which stops its accuracy being lowered, and its hidden Ability is Sniper, which makes critical hits hit harder. It learns Peck, Fury Attack, Aerial Ace, Mirror Move and Drill Peck, and can use Roost to recover. Its best base stat is Speed at 70, so it is a frail early-game flier rather than a serious fighter.

### Name origin

Spearow may combine 'spear', for its sharp beak, with 'sparrow'. The Japanese name is Onisuzume (オニスズメ), which may join oni (鬼, ogre or demon) and suzume (雀, sparrow).

### Design inspiration

Spearow looks like a sparrow crossed with a shrike, a bird with a hooked beak. Shrikes are territorial and nicknamed 'butcher birds' for the way they feed, which may explain Spearow's temper. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Spearow evolves into Fearow at level 20.

### In the games

In Yellow your rival Blue fields a Spearow in three battles, and the species first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan). Bulbapedia lists it as catchable in Sun and Moon, Let's Go, and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

A huge flock debuted in 'Pokémon - I Choose You!' after Ash hit one with a rock and it chased him and Pikachu away; its leader returned as a Fearow in 'Pallet Party Panic!'. Goh caught a Spearow off-screen in 'Destination: Coronation!', en route to Vermilion Gym.

### Fun facts

- At 0.3 m, Spearow is tied with Pidgey as the shortest Flying type of Generation I.
- A Spearow in a Viridian City house is nicknamed 'Speary'; translator Nob Ogasawara reportedly wanted 'Britney', after Britney Spears, but Nintendo of America rejected it.
- An early Spearow design appeared in Game Freak's original Capsule Monsters pitch to Nintendo, and Bulbapedia says it also carries a trait of Farfetch'd.
