Mysterious Pokémon · Water/Psychic-type

![Starmie official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/121.webp)

Starmie is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)-type Pokémon, the Mysterious Pokémon, number 121 (#0121) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 80 kg.

Starmie is the Mysterious Pokémon, a spinning purple double starfish whose jewel-like core glows in seven colours and beams signals into space. People have long suspected it of being an alien, and in Legends: Z-A its Mega form moves like a person.

## How to pronounce Starmie

Starmie is pronounced **STAR-mee**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

In Japanese it is スターミー.

## Lore

### Biology

Starmie is 1.1 m tall and 80 kg, two violet starfish joined together. The back one spins a full 360 degrees, driving it through the water like a ship's propeller. The front one holds a golden casing around a red core that glows in seven colours; the Ultra Sun Pokédex calls it the gem of the sea and says it is crafted into costly accessories sold in secret.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex says Starmie's core beams strange radio signals up into the night sky, and that people take its glow as a way of communicating. Its odd shape has led locals to suspect it is an alien, and the Sun Pokédex says those who approach it can get headaches.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia says it is rarely met in the wild, with its home in the ocean's deepest waters. In Legends: Z-A it lives in Wild Zones 16 and 20.

### Diet

The Shield Pokédex says it absorbs tiny plankton as it cruises through the ocean.

### Powers

Illuminate doubles the wild encounter rate, Natural Cure heals status on switch-out, and Analytic is hidden. It learns Surf, Psychic, Hydro Pump and Recover, and with 115 Speed it is a fast special attacker. Mega Starmie, from Legends: Z-A, stands 2.3 m tall, bends its elbows and knees, and walks and sprints like a human; its Ability in the game data is Huge Power, but Bulbapedia says Z-A has no Abilities, so its Attack gets 40 extra points there, for a total of 660. The Z-A Pokédex says it is unclear whether Mega Starmie wants to talk to humanity or replace it.

### Name origin

Starmie may combine 'star' with 'mystery', and the Japanese name is the same word, Starmie (スターミー).

### Design inspiration

Starmie seems modelled on a stylised starfish, perhaps the purple sea star or the sunflower sea star. Mega Starmie may nod to Warning from Space, a 1956 film in which a starfish-like alien takes human form, and its humanoid shape could also pun on hitode, the Japanese word for starfish, which can be read as 'human hand'. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Staryu becomes Starmie through a Water Stone.

### In the games

A Starmie on Route 15's northern beach is in a week-long staring contest that a Pokémon knowing Tickle can win, in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Mega Starmie arrived in Legends: Z-A, where Starmie lives in the base game and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose; Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.

### In the anime

Misty's Starmie debuted in 'The Water Flowers of Cerulean City', though she tended to use Staryu more. In Pokémon Horizons, Friede's Instructor Starmie is revealed to be able to Mega Evolve in 'The Catcher in the Sky' and, per Bulbapedia, a Mega Starmie survives outer space unassisted in 'Roy vs. Friede: Wings of Fire!'.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Starmie is the only Psychic-type Pokémon in the Water 3 Egg Group.
- In the Japan-only Pokémon Stadium, Bulbapedia says Starmie appears to have been designed more rubbery, with its limbs stretching when hit.
- In the first Super Smash Bros., Starmie came out of Poké Balls and barraged opponents with Swift, before later games replaced it with Staryu.
