# Stunfisk

Trap Pokémon · Ground/Electric-type

![Stunfisk official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/618.webp)

Stunfisk is a [Ground](https://pokee.si/types/ground)/[Electric](https://pokee.si/types/electric)-type Pokémon, the Trap Pokémon, number 618 (#0618) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 0.7 m tall and weighs 11 kg.

Stunfisk is the Trap Pokémon, a flat, mud-coloured fish that lies buried in the shore mud and shocks anything that touches it. The Pokédex says a sumo wrestler stepping on it does it no harm, and that it smiles while it zaps.

## How to pronounce Stunfisk

Stunfisk is pronounced **STUN-fisk**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

In Japanese it is マッギョ (Maggyo).

## Lore

### Biology

Stunfisk is a broad, flat fish listed at 0.7 m and 11 kg, with a mud-brown body, small white eyes with no irises and two thick grey lips. A yellow marking at the base of its tail looks like an exclamation mark from behind, and yellow markings like it generate electricity. Two small fins let it flap into the air in short leaps.

### Behaviour

Stunfisk conceals itself in the mud, waits, and delivers a jolt when prey touches it. For reasons the Pokédex does not explain, it smiles slightly while giving off a strong current. If its foe cannot be paralysed, it contorts itself and flops away with surprising speed.

### Habitat

Stunfisk lives on mudflats and along coasts.

### Powers

Stunfisk's Abilities are Static, which can paralyse attackers on contact, and Limber, with Sand Veil hidden. The Sword Pokédex credits bacteria in the mud for its electric organs. Its Ground and Electric typing makes it immune to Electric moves, and it uses Thunder Shock, Mud Shot, Muddy Water and Discharge. Galarian Stunfisk is Ground and Steel, with the Ability Mimicry: it cannot make electricity, and the iron in its mud has hardened its fins into a bear-trap that snaps shut on prey. The Unovan form is bulky, with 109 base HP, but its Speed of 32 is very slow.

### Name origin

Stunfisk may combine 'stun' with 'fisk' (fish in many Germanic languages), or with 'fish' and 'disk'. The Japanese name is Maggyo (マッギョ), possibly from maddo ('mud') and gyo ('fish').

### Design inspiration

Mana Ibe designed Unovan Stunfisk, reportedly out of a wish to create the flattest Pokémon of all. It is based on a flounder, and may also draw on electric rays or stargazers. The Galarian form could be modelled on a foothold trap.

### In the games

Stunfisk first appeared in Black and White, and Galarian Stunfisk arrived in Sword and Shield. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A the Unovan form lives in Wild Zones 11 and 20, a single Galarian Stunfisk appears in Wild Zone 11 during one side mission, and both forms turn up in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### In the anime

Cilan's Stunfisk debuted in 'Facing Fear with Eyes Wide Open!', helping Palpitoad drive Ash and his friends out of a lake before Cilan caught it. Goh caught a Galarian Stunfisk in 'Grabbing the Brass Ring!'.

### Fun facts

- No other species shares Stunfisk's base stat total of 471, and both forms have it.
- Because Electric types cannot be paralysed from Generation VI onwards, Bulbapedia notes, Stunfisk's Limber Ability does nothing unless its type changes.
- Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon learns Snap Trap or can have the Ability Mimicry; only Galarian Stunfisk does.
