It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 81.9 kg.

Swampert is the Mud Fish Pokémon, a Water and Ground powerhouse whose rock-hard arms can break a boulder in one swing, according to the Pokédex. It can also haul a big ship along as it swims, the Pokédex says.

## Lore

### Biology

Swampert is a bulky, semi-bipedal amphibian, 1.5 m tall and 81.9 kg, cobalt blue with a white belly. Orange cone-shaped gills sprout from round patches on its cheeks, orange padding covers its limbs, and large black fan-like fins rise from its head and tail. The Pokédex says its powerful vision lets it see clearly even in murky water.

### Behaviour

Swampert is strong enough to haul a boulder of over a ton, and the Emerald Pokédex claims it swims at jet-ski speed. It senses storms through subtle changes in the sound of waves and tidal winds, and piles up boulders to protect its nest when one approaches. Bulbapedia says it covers itself in mud to keep its skin moist.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists the water's edge and says Swampert nests on beautiful beaches. In Scarlet and Violet it comes from evolving a Marshtomp in The Indigo Disk.

### Powers

Torrent strengthens its Water moves at low HP, and Damp is hidden. Muddy Water, learned at level 42, was its signature move in Generation III, and it also learns Hydro Pump and Earthquake. Using Swampertite, which arrived in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it becomes Mega Swampert with Swift Swim and a base Attack of 150; the anime says it fills organs on its back with air to power its punches, and the Legends: Z-A Pokédex compares the water in its body to a hydraulic pump. With 100 HP and Attack 110 it is a bulky, hard-hitting attacker.

### Name origin

Swampert may combine 'swamp' with 'rampart', 'expert' or 'earth'. The Japanese name is Laglarge (ラグラージ), which may mix 'lagoon' and 'large', and possibly 'lag' or 'lug'.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says the fins on Swampert's head and tail look like tessen, Japanese war fans, and its stance recalls a sumo wrestler. Mega Swampert's air-jet swimming may draw on scuba diving. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Swampert evolves from Marshtomp at level 36 and is the final form of the Mudkip line.

### In the games

Swampert is the final stage of Birch's Mudkip in Ruby and Sapphire, where it debuted, and a member of Team Hydro in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team. In Legends: Z-A it appears only in the Mega Dimension DLC, in Hyperspace Lumiose's tougher Water-type and Ground-type wild zones.

### In the anime

Swampert debuted in 'Abandon Ship!', where Tommy's Marshtomp had evolved while stranded on the Forsaken Ship and believed its Trainer had abandoned it. Morrison's Swampert tied with Ash's Corphish in 'Choose It or Lose It!', and May's Mega Swampert beat Rayquaza in the Pokémon Evolutions episode 'The Wish'.

### Fun facts

- Among fully evolved first partner Pokémon, Swampert's base stat total of 535 is the best, one point clear of Typhlosion, Infernape, Delphox and Charizard.
- Mega Swampert's base stat total of 635 is shared by no other Pokémon, according to Bulbapedia, and the game data agrees.
- A Swampert able to Mega Evolve fell under the Mega Wave's control in the film Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, until Alva's crystal was destroyed.
