![Tapu Bulu official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/787.webp)

Tapu Bulu is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)/[Fairy](https://pokee.si/types/fairy)-type Pokémon, the Land Spirit Pokémon, number 787 (#0787) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 1.9 m tall and weighs 45.5 kg.

Tapu Bulu is the guardian deity of Ula'ula Island, a Grass and Fairy type that uproots big trees and swings them about. Even so, the Pokédex calls it lazy, and it rings a bell on its tail so that others know where it is and conflicts are avoided.

## How to pronounce Tapu Bulu

## Lore

### Biology

Tapu Bulu is vaguely bull-like, with a bulky black body, thick arms ending in golden hooves and no legs. Its tail is covered by a golden bell, and each curved black horn carries half of a wooden shell, red with white and yellow markings. Open, the shell looks like a flower; closed, it makes a bull's head. It is 1.9 m (6'3") tall and weighs 45.5 kg (100.3 lbs). The Pokédex says it makes plants grow and then feeds on their energy.

### Behaviour

Tapu Bulu rings its tail to announce itself and steer clear of needless fights. It is not always so gentle: one entry says it will crush anyone it counts as an enemy, and Bulbapedia says it shows no mercy to anyone who offends it. It reportedly chased thieves away from its ruins by wielding trees as clubs.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat; it is the guardian deity of Ula'ula Island, and in Sun and Moon it waits at the Ruins of Abundance. It can be met in Sword and Shield's Max Lair, but is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Ability Grassy Surge sets Grassy Terrain on entry, and Telepathy is hidden. Moves like Wood Hammer, Horn Leech and Megahorn use its horns, while Leech Seed and Mega Drain draw life from the target. Its 130 base Attack and 115 base Defense make it a bulky physical attacker.

### Name origin

Tapu is a Polynesian word for sacred or forbidden, and Bulu may simply come from 'bull'. The Japanese name is Kapu-Bulul (カプ・ブルル), which may combine Hawaiian kapu with 'bull'.

### Design inspiration

Tapu Bulu looks like a bull, with a tiki-statue look. Bulbapedia suggests it may allude to Lono, a Hawaiian god of agriculture, abundance and peace, and that the Moon entry calling it lazy could echo the rule against unnecessary work during festivals for Lono. These are fan readings, not official statements.

### In the games

In Sun and Moon, where it debuted, you can battle Tapu Bulu at the Ruins of Abundance after becoming Champion. In Pokémon Rumble Rush it appears in the Rowlet Sea.

### In the anime

Appeared with the other guardian deities in 'A Dream Encounter!', where they felt a Cosmog, nicknamed Nebby, being born. It made its first solo appearance in 'Some Kind of Laziness!', battling Ash's Lycanroc.

### Fun facts

- At 1.9 m it is the tallest Fairy type of Generation VII, taller than Primarina and Tapu Koko.
- In Pokémon Adventures it arrives to save Sun and Moon from a Blacephalon.
- Bulbapedia counts the ruined Tapu Village on Ula'ula as another example of its wrath.
