## Lore

### Biology

Tapu Fini has a black, mermaid-shaped body, light blue fins like flowing hair and long arms with purple claws. Its violet shell looks like a swordfish head when closed, and Bulbapedia compares the hinged shell to a bivalve's. It is 1.3 m (4'3") tall and weighs 21.2 kg (46.7 lbs). The Pokédex says it controls water and draws its energy from ocean currents.

### Behaviour

Tapu Fini makes its home in the depths of a dense fog. Bulbapedia says it uses that fog as a test for anyone seeking its pure water, and that many humans who tried, some with bad intentions, left it disgusted with people, though it will help those who prove worthy. Even so, the Pokédex says its fog sends confused enemies to their downfall, so it is feared as well as respected.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in the depths of a dense fog; it is the guardian deity of Poni Island, and in Sun and Moon it waits at the Ruins of Hope. It can be met in Sword and Shield's Max Lair, but is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Ability Misty Surge sets Misty Terrain on entry, and Telepathy is hidden. It uses Surf, Hydro Pump and Muddy Water alongside Moonblast, and Haze, Soak and Heal Pulse for support. With 130 base Special Defense and 115 Defense it is a sturdy, defensive Pokémon.

### Name origin

Tapu is a Polynesian word for sacred or forbidden, and Fini may simply come from 'fin'. The Japanese name is Kapu-Rehire (カプ・レヒレ), which may combine Hawaiian kapu with the Japanese word hire, meaning fin.

### Design inspiration

With its shell closed it resembles a billfish such as a swordfish, and open it recalls a mermaid. Bulbapedia suggests it may allude to Kanaloa, the Hawaiian god of the ocean, whose link to the underworld could echo its shrine, the Ruins of Hope, described as the place where life ends its journey. These are fan readings, not official statements.

### In the games

In Sun and Moon, where it debuted, you can battle Tapu Fini at the Ruins of Hope after becoming Champion. In Pokémon Rumble Rush it appears in the Rowlet Sea.

### In the anime

Debuted in 'A Dream Encounter!' partly shown alongside the other guardian deities, and appeared fully in 'Family Determination!'. In 'Memories in the Mist!' its mist is shown as a bridge between the living and the spirits of the dead.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says it is the only guardian deity whose first Ability does not create a terrain matching its first type: Misty Terrain belongs to Fairy, not Water.
- A second anime episode, 'Scare at the Litwick Mansion!', also ties mist to a link with the Ghost World, according to Bulbapedia.
- In Pokémon Adventures it gives Hapu a Sparkling Stone, making her Poni Island's new kahuna.
