# Tapu Koko

Land Spirit Pokémon · Electric/Fairy-type

![Tapu Koko official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/785.webp)

Tapu Koko is a [Electric](https://pokee.si/types/electric)/[Fairy](https://pokee.si/types/fairy)-type Pokémon, the Land Spirit Pokémon, number 785 (#0785) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 20.5 kg.

Tapu Koko is the guardian deity of Melemele Island, a curious Electric and Fairy type that flies too fast for the eye to follow and forgets its anger almost at once. Despite the title, the Pokédex warns that a bad mood can turn it into a malevolent deity that attacks.

## Lore

### Biology

Tapu Koko is vaguely rooster-like, with a black body, a large orange plume and an orange lower body with four spiky, tail-feather-like projections. Half of a yellow bird mask is fixed to each arm, and it can pull the halves together and tuck its upper body inside, which makes a stylised rooster face. It is 1.8 m (5'11") tall and weighs 20.5 kg (45.2 lbs). The Pokédex says it calls up thunderclouds and keeps their lightning in its body.

### Behaviour

Tapu Koko is very curious and shows up before people now and then. The Pokédex says it has a hair-trigger temper. Bulbapedia adds that it is capricious and does not always help people in trouble, but it may turn up to play or battle with anyone or any Pokémon that interests it.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat; it is the guardian deity of Melemele Island, and in Sun and Moon it waits at the Ruins of Conflict. It can be met in Sword and Shield's Max Lair, but is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Ability Electric Surge sets Electric Terrain the moment it enters battle, and Telepathy is hidden. It fights with Discharge, Wild Charge and Brave Bird, and with Nature's Madness, a move that Bulbapedia says only the four guardian deities can learn; the same four are the only ones that can use the Z-Move Guardian of Alola. With 130 base Speed and 115 base Attack it is a fast, hard-hitting attacker.

### Name origin

Tapu may come from the Polynesian word for sacred or forbidden, which also gave English 'taboo', and Koko from the Hawaiian word for a rooster's crow. The Japanese name is Kapu-Kokeko (カプ・コケコ), which may pair Hawaiian kapu with the Japanese crow kokekokkō.

### Design inspiration

Its mask appears to be a stylised rooster, and the whole design resembles a tiki statue. Bulbapedia suggests it may nod to Kukailimoku, a Hawaiian god of war often shown as feathered idols, and to the Thunderbird of North American myth. These are fan readings, not official statements.

### In the games

Battling Tapu Koko at the Ruins of Conflict after becoming Champion is, Bulbapedia says, the final fight of Sun and Moon, where it debuted. In Pokémon Rumble Rush it appears in the Rowlet Sea.

### In the anime

Debuted in 'Alola to New Adventure!', where it presented Ash with a Z-Ring set with an Electrium Z. In 'Battling the Beast Within!' a Shiny Tapu Koko and a second Tapu Koko sent Ash and Pikachu off to the Ultra Ruin.

- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate it appears from a Poké Ball and uses Discharge and Electric Terrain.
