Thundurus is a [Electric](https://pokee.si/types/electric)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Bolt Strike Pokémon, number 642 (#0642) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 61 kg.

Thundurus is the Bolt Strike Pokémon, a storm spirit that legend says has fought Tornadus since time immemorial. It scorches forests as it flies, yet the same lightning is said to enrich the soil it strikes.

## How to pronounce Thundurus

## Lore

### Biology

Thundurus is a blue, muscular, genie-like Pokémon, 1.5 m tall and 61 kg, with one long purple horn, jagged white hair and a spiky white moustache. Below the waist it trails off into a cloud, and its long purple tail is threaded through a row of dark orbs, each carrying a spike. Every Thundurus is male.

### Behaviour

Thundurus is a feared troublemaker. It flies about shooting lightning, which sets forests alight, so the Pokédex says it is disliked, and it leaves charred ruins wherever it has passed. Bulbapedia adds that it can conjure small thunderstorms and wrap itself in a shield of wind.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia places it in the skies, typically above the oceans, and the Pokédex has it flying around Unova. In Scarlet and Violet it can only arrive by Pokémon HOME transfer or event.

### Powers

Its Ability Prankster gives its status moves priority, and its Hidden Ability Defiant sharply raises Attack when a stat is lowered. Its signature move is Wildbolt Storm, which Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon can learn; in Scarlet and Violet's data it arrives at level 75. The Reveal Glass switches Thundurus to its Therian Forme, a sleek, serpent-like body 3 m tall with paw-like hands, hind legs and a different Ability, Volt Absorb. That form trades Attack (105) and Speed (101) for a Special Attack of 145, and in Legends: Arceus the Pokédex says it appears from nowhere and pulverises foes with bolts from its tail orbs. In either form it is a fast special attacker.

### Name origin

Thundurus may blend 'thunderous' with Aeolus, the Greek ruler of the winds. The Japanese name is Voltolos (ボルトロス), which may combine 'volt' with Aiolos, the Greek form of Aeolus.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Thundurus is based on Raijin, the Japanese kami of thunder and lightning. It also reports Junichi Masuda's remark that the Therian Forme matches the Azure Dragon of Chinese myth, and Legends: Arceus places Thundurus in the eastern Cobalt Coastlands, the Azure Dragon's direction. The Incarnate Forme may also borrow from genies. These readings are fan inference except where a developer is named.

### In the games

Thundurus is one of the three forces of nature, introduced in Black and White, where it roams Unova in White while Black players needed a trade or event. In Generation VI, Battle Chatelaine Nita uses one in the Battle Maison, and in Legends: Arceus it appears in the Cobalt Coastlands during thunderstorms. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Thundurus made its series debut in the two-part 'Stopping the Rage of Legends!', fighting Tornadus on Milos Island after Team Rocket wrecked a shrine there. In 'Unova's Survival Crisis!' it appeared in both Formes after Giovanni summoned it to the Abyssal Ruins.

### Fun facts

- Its category, the Bolt Strike Pokémon, matches the name of the move Bolt Strike, but Thundurus cannot learn it: the move belongs to Zekrom.
- Its Incarnate Forme has exactly the same base stats as Tornadus, its supposed rival.
- In the Generation VII games a coding error stopped Therian Forme Thundurus from learning Smart Strike.
- Its first appearance in animation was a cameo in the ending credits of the Black version of the film Victini and Reshiram, where it raised a thunderstorm that Ash and a friend ran into.
