![Toxicroak official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/454.webp)

Toxicroak is a [Poison](https://pokee.si/types/poison)/[Fighting](https://pokee.si/types/fighting)-type Pokémon, the Toxic Mouth Pokémon, number 454 (#0454) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 1.3 m tall and weighs 44.4 kg.

Toxicroak is the Toxic Mouth Pokémon, a bouncing poison-dart fighter whose claws carry a toxin so strong the Pokédex says even a scratch could be fatal. It croaks before a fight to churn its poison into something more potent.

## How to pronounce Toxicroak

Toxicroak is pronounced **TOKS-ih-krohk**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Toxicroak is a frog in dark blue and teal, 1.3 m tall and 44.4 kg, with bright yellow eyes, a curled spike on its head and a bulbous red vocal sac under its chin that is smaller on a female. A large red claw juts from the back of each hand and a sharp spike from each heel. The Pokédex says the claws secrete poison and that the throat sac churns it when Toxicroak croaks.

### Behaviour

Toxicroak is quick, and weaves and sways around attacks before lunging in. The Pokédex says it croaks out a victory call when its prey goes down. Bulbapedia, citing Pokémon Sleep, says it sleeps with its throat sac as a cushion and throws punches if anyone approaches, and may be practising Poison Jab in its dreams.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives in moist areas around water. In Scarlet and Violet it is at Casseroya Lake in North Province, but it is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Anticipation and Dry Skin, with Poison Touch hidden. It jabs with Poison Jab, pounds with Close Combat and Drain Punch, and sharpens up with Swords Dance and Nasty Plot. Base Attack 106 and Speed 85 make it a fast, hard-hitting attacker.

### Name origin

Toxicroak may combine 'toxic' and 'croak'. The Japanese name Dokurog (ドクロッグ) may combine doku ('poison') and 'frog'.

### Design inspiration

Toxicroak may be based on a poison dart frog. Bulbapedia suggests its hand claws may come from the hairy frog, which can break its own toes and push the sharpened bones through its skin, or from the wrist knives of a ninja. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Croagunk evolves into Toxicroak at level 37.

### In the games

Saturn, one of Team Galactic's four Commanders, uses Toxicroak in Diamond and Pearl, where the species debuted, and again in Platinum and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. In Scarlet and Violet it lives at Casseroya Lake and appears in 4-star Tera Raids.

### In the anime

Saturn's Toxicroak debuted in 'Enter Galactic!' and developed a rivalry with Brock's Croagunk. In 'A Cellular Connection!', several angry Toxicroak chase Ash and friends off a cliff after one of Clemont's inventions explodes.

### Fun facts

- The Pokédex says Toxicroak and Seismitoad are related species.
- According to the Legends: Arceus Pokédex, its toxin becomes a tonic once watered down, blended with wild grasses and simmered for two days.
- In the anime, in Legends: Arceus and on Pokémon HOME, Toxicroak has light turquoise skin, close to its Shiny colouring.
