Turtonator is a [Fire](https://pokee.si/types/fire)/[Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)-type Pokémon, the Blast Turtle Pokémon, number 776 (#0776) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 2 m tall and weighs 212 kg.

Turtonator is the Blast Turtle Pokémon, a Fire and Dragon type whose spiked shell is coated in explosive compounds, so anyone who strikes it can be blown away. The Pokédex says it eats sulfur in volcanoes, and that even its droppings are dangerously explosive.

## Lore

### Biology

Turtonator is a bipedal turtle, 2.0 m (6'07") tall and 212 kg (467.4 lb), with muted green skin, a long tubular yellow snout and a red and yellow shell covered in spikes. A star-shaped hole in the underside of the shell is its weak point. The Pokédex says the shell is chemically unstable and goes off with a violent blast if hit.

### Behaviour

Turtonator hides among volcanic rocks and waits for prey, Bulbapedia says, and when something steps on its shell it whacks itself with its tail to set off a blast. It gushes fire and poisonous gas from its nostrils. The Pokédex says its shell is sensitive to moisture, so on rainy days it silently takes refuge in caves.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in volcanoes. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

The Pokédex says it eats sulfur and other minerals, which build the explosive material in its shell and make its droppings dangerously explosive too.

### Powers

Its only Ability, Shell Armor, blocks critical hits. Its signature move, Shell Trap, can be learned by no other Pokémon, and it also has Flamethrower, Overheat, Dragon Pulse, Shell Smash and Explosion. A base Defense of 135 and Special Attack of 91 make it a slow, sturdy special attacker.

### Name origin

Turtonator may combine 'turtle' and 'detonator'. The Japanese name is Bakugames (バクガメス), which Bulbapedia reads as bakuhatsu ('explosion') and kame ('turtle').

### Design inspiration

Turtonator may be modelled on the mata mata, a type of turtle, and on a land mine, and its shell looks like a stylised blast, with flame at the base and rocky lumps as debris. It may also nod to the Tarasque, a mythical dragon-like hybrid, or to the Chinese dragon turtle. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Turtonator is a Sun and Ultra Sun exclusive, found on Blush Mountain in Sun and Moon, where it debuted, so Moon players needed a trade or event. In Sword and Shield it is a Sword exclusive found around the Lake of Outrage and, with the Expansion Pass, the Giant's Bed and Frigid Sea.

### In the anime

Kiawe's Turtonator debuted in 'Alola to New Adventure!' and was first used against Tupp, Zipp and Rapp. Another Turtonator belonged to the Shell Sage in 'Eyes on the Goal!'.

### Fun facts

- Its six base stats are exactly the same numbers as Drampa's, 485 in total, shuffled round with only Speed left in place.
- In Pokémon Adventures its droppings are used as makeshift landmines that explode at a touch.
- It is the tallest and heaviest Fire type introduced in Generation VII.
