![Tyrantrum official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/697.webp)

Tyrantrum is a [Rock](https://pokee.si/types/rock)/[Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)-type Pokémon, the Despot Pokémon, number 697 (#0697) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the [Kalos](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kalos) region. It is 2.5 m tall and weighs 270 kg.

Tyrantrum is the Despot Pokémon, a fossil-revived Rock and Dragon tyrannosaur that the Pokédex says ruled the ancient world 100 million years ago. Its jaws could shear metal plates like paper, and it wears a feather cape and a crown of spikes.

## How to pronounce Tyrantrum

Tyrantrum is pronounced **ty-RAN-trum**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Tyrantrum is 2.5 m tall and weighs 270 kg. It is brick red with a grey belly, a row of five spikes above its eyes like a crown, a white feathery beard and a neck ruff that spreads over its shoulders like a cape. Its forelimbs are tiny, but its hind legs and jaws are huge. The Pokédex says complete restoration is impossible, leaving room for the theory that its whole body was once covered in feathers.

### Behaviour

Pokédex entries call Tyrantrum vicious but magnificent, with the presence of a king, and say that nothing could stop it, so it behaved like a king. Bulbapedia, citing the Sleep Style Dex in Pokémon Sleep, adds that it sleeps unguarded and that its big yawns fill the area with a frightening atmosphere.

### Habitat

The Pokédex places it in the ancient world of about 100 million years ago. In Sword and Shield it roams the Crown Tundra, and it is not in Scarlet and Violet.

### Powers

Strong Jaw powers up biting moves like Crunch, and Rock Head, its hidden Ability, protects it from recoil, which suits its level 66 move Head Smash. It also uses Dragon Claw, Earthquake and Dragon Dance. With 121 base Attack and 119 base Defense it is a sturdy, hard-hitting bruiser.

### Name origin

Tyrantrum may combine Tyrannosaurus, 'tyrant' and 'tantrum'. The Japanese name is Gachigoras (ガチゴラス), perhaps from gachigachi ('teeth chattering'), gachi ('for real') and Chigoras, the name of its pre-evolution.

### Design inspiration

Hitoshi Ariga designed Tyrantrum from Tyrannosaurus. Bulbapedia, citing his posts, says the crest works as a crown, the jaw fringe as a beard and the neck fringe as a fur-lined cape, while the feathers come from the idea that Tyrannosaurus had them.

### Evolution notes

Tyrantrum evolves from Tyrunt at level 39 during the day and does not evolve further.

### In the games

Champion Diantha uses a Tyrantrum in X and Y, its first game, and Grant brings one to the Battle Chateau. In Legends: Z-A you get it by evolving a Tyrunt, and wild ones appear in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose, where Bulbapedia says a special scan is needed.

### In the anime

Four Tyrantrum first showed up in 'The Tiny Caretaker!', all belonging to a group of Scientists, and one had grown from a Tyrunt to protect Bonnie. She had to say goodbye, as it was not hers to keep. Diantha's Tyrantrum appears briefly in 'It's... Champion Time!'.

### Fun facts

- A replica of a Tyrantrum skeleton was made for the Pokémon Fossil Museum exhibit.
- Tyrantrum and Aurorus each finish on a base stat total of exactly 521, after evolving from a 362-total fossil Pokémon.
- In Pokémon Masters EX, Diantha forms a sync pair with Tyrantrum.
