# Varoom

Single-Cyl Pokémon · Steel/Poison-type

![Varoom official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/965.webp)

Varoom is a [Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)/[Poison](https://pokee.si/types/poison)-type Pokémon, the Single-Cyl Pokémon, number 965 (#0965) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 35 kg.

Varoom is a living engine: the Pokédex says it was born when a mysterious Poison Pokémon moved into an engine left in a scrap-processing factory. Only the steel part is its real body.

## How to pronounce Varoom

Varoom is pronounced **vuh-ROOM**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

In Japanese it is ブロロン (Buroron).

## Lore

### Biology

Varoom is 1 m tall and weighs 35 kg. It resembles a small single-cylinder engine, with a skull-tipped front, a yellow eye on each side, a tall striped block on top and a long exhaust pipe stained purple at the tip. Bulbapedia says it levitates and flies rather than rolling along the ground.

### Behaviour

Canon says almost nothing about Varoom's temperament. Bulbapedia says it attaches itself to rocks that look like wheels.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet Varoom is found in East Province (Area Three) and West Province (Area Two), including mines and mountains, and in 2-star Tera Raid Battles.

### Diet

The Pokédex says it clings to rocks and turns the minerals inside them into energy.

### Powers

Overcoat protects it from weather damage, while its hidden Ability, Slow Start, halves its Attack and Speed for the first five turns. It learns Sludge, Gyro Ball, Iron Head, Spin Out and Gunk Shot. With base Defense 63 and Speed 47 it is a slow, sturdy early Steel and Poison type.

### Name origin

Varoom is probably 'vroom', the sound of a revving engine. The Japanese name is Buroron (ブロロン), which may combine burororo (an engine sound) and burun (another word for 'vroom').

### Design inspiration

Yusuke Kozaki designed Varoom and Revavroom. Varoom appears to be modelled on a single-cylinder engine of the kind found in small machines. An engine taken over by a spirit may echo tsukumogami, objects that come to life in Japanese folklore, and its look may borrow from 1920s and 1930s 'rubber hose' cartoons. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Varoom evolves into Revavroom at level 40.

### In the games

Team Star's Starmobiles use Varoom as their rear wheels in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. It is not in either expansion and is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Debuted in 'Dot and Nidothing' as a wild Pokémon that ran off with Dot's Nidothing costume as far as Levincia, until Dot's Quaxly calmed it down.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon shares its Steel and Poison typing, and that Varoom and Revavroom are the only Poison Pokémon immune to their own type.
- It and Revavroom appeared in trailers and gameplay showcases for Scarlet and Violet, but stayed unnamed until release.
- With base Speed 47 it is the slowest of the Steel types introduced in Generation IX, according to poke.si's records.
