Veluza is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)-type Pokémon, the Jettison Pokémon, number 976 (#0976) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 2.5 m tall and weighs 90 kg.

Veluza is the Jettison Pokémon, a Water and Psychic type that peels off its own flesh to become faster and sharper. The Pokédex adds that the discarded flesh tastes mild but delicious.

## Lore

### Biology

Veluza is a grey fish with translucent magenta fins, red eyes, thin blue lines running from its eyes along its body, and a mouth that hangs open to show sharp teeth. Inside, a row of diamond-shaped spikes runs along each side like a backbone, and three of them are longer and poke out through the flesh. It is 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) tall and weighs 90 kg (198.4 lb). The Pokédex says it regenerates so well that the flesh it discards grows back.

### Behaviour

Veluza hunts by shedding spare flesh to boost its agility, then charging at prey. The Pokédex says discarding the flesh also hones its mind and strengthens its psychic power.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it swims in the North and West Paldean Sea and Casseroya Lake, and it appears in 4 star Tera Raid Battles.

### Powers

Veluza's signature move is Fillet Away, which sharply boosts its Attack, Special Attack and Speed by using its own HP. It has Mold Breaker, which lets its moves ignore Abilities that would block them, or the hidden Sharpness, which strengthens slicing moves such as Aqua Cutter, Psycho Cut and Night Slash. With 102 base Attack and only 70 base Speed, it relies on Fillet Away to outpace its opponents.

### Name origin

Veluza may combine veloz (Spanish and Portuguese for 'fast') with merluza ('hake'). The Japanese name is Migalusa (ミガルーサ), possibly from migaru ('nimble') and merluza.

### Design inspiration

Veluza's name and shape suggest the hake, especially fish of the Merlucciidae family. Bulbapedia notes that hake is a staple of Spanish cooking, which would suit Paldea's Iberian-inspired setting. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Veluza is a wild Water Pokémon of Paldea's seas and lakes in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Fun facts

- Gym Leader Kofu has a catchphrase built on it: "Vaultin' Veluza!"
- Bulbapedia thinks the Smoked Fillet and Fried Fillet sandwich ingredients may be Veluza's shed flesh, since its signature move is called Fillet Away.
- In the manga Pokémon Adventures, a wild Veluza attacks Violet and Arven as they travel through Casseroya Lake, and they quickly fend it off.
