## Lore

### Biology

Wailord is a huge, blue whale-like cetacean, 14.5 m long and 398 kg, with tiny beady eyes, a cavernous mouth, a grooved tan underbelly and a blue back with four white spots. Bulbapedia calls it the tallest non-Legendary Pokémon; only Gigantamax forms stand taller. The Pokédex says it can dive close to 3,000 m (10,000 ft) on a single breath.

### Behaviour

Wailord live in pods and herd prey by breaching and crashing back onto the sea; the Pokédex says the shock can knock out opponents. If a young Wailmer is threatened by Sharpedo or Dhelmise, its whole pod rallies to defend it.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list puts it in the sea. Bulbapedia says it cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet or in Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

The Pokédex says it swallows entire schools of Wishiwashi, and that fishermen have to chase pods away once a pod grows so large that it devours too many fish Pokémon.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Water Veil and Oblivious, with Pressure hidden. It makes huge splashes with Hydro Pump, Brine and Heavy Slam, and in Sword and Shield Water Spout arrives at level 54. Its 170 base HP is the most of any Water type.

### Name origin

Wailord combines 'wail' and 'lord', and may also involve 'whale'. The Japanese name is Whaloh (ホエルオー), from hoeru, 'to wail', and ō, 'king', perhaps with 'whale'.

### Design inspiration

The blue whale, the biggest animal known to have lived, looks to be Wailord's model, and its bulk has the look of a submarine, a torpedo or a blimp too.

### Evolution notes

Wailord evolves from Wailmer at level 40 and is the end of the line.

### In the games

Wailord's best-known game role is at Hoenn's Sealed Chamber, where it and Relicanth are needed to open other sealed sites; it debuted in Ruby and Sapphire. In Black 2 and White 2, spotting one in the Marine Tube earns the Wailord Watcher medal.

### In the anime

Wailord debuted in 'Having a Wailord of a Time', beached next to a Pokémon Center until Team Rocket's plan to haul it away failed. In 'Pikachu's Exciting Adventure!', Pikachu and Lycanroc went inside a Wailord to find Ash's trapped Meltan and burst out of its blowhole.

### Fun facts

- In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Wailord is the only Pokémon that does not need to be captured to join the Browser, because its entry says it is too big to catch.
- Pokémon Colosseum and XD shrank Wailord to fit the battlefield, but Pokémon Battle Revolution made it as big as its Pokédex entry says.
- In Sword and Shield, the Poké Job employer Wailord Aquaculture is named after it, and its logo is a Wailord head.
