## Lore

### Biology

Walrein is a large blue walrus with slim white rings circling its neck, a fan-like tail fin, tufts of white fur around its face and two long ivory tusks. It is 1.4 m tall and weighs 150.6 kg. The Pokédex says a thick layer of blubber insulates it and makes enemy attacks bounce off. Its tusks keep growing for life, and ones broken in battle grow back within a year; the Ruby Pokédex claims they can shatter ice weighing 10 tons in one blow.

### Behaviour

Walrein live in herds of 20 to 30, and when a threat appears the leader protects the group with its life. The Emerald entry adds that the leader fights anything that invades the herd's territory.

### Habitat

The Pokédex places Walrein in icy seas, where it swims among icebergs. It lives around the Crown Tundra's Frigid Sea in Sword and Shield, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Thick Fat and Ice Body are its regular Abilities, with Oblivious hidden. It bites with Crunch and Ice Fang, uses Surf and Blizzard, and learns the one-hit knockout Sheer Cold at level 72. With base Defense 90 and Special Attack 95 it is a bulky, hard-hitting Ice type.

### Name origin

Walrein may combine 'walrus' and 'reign', with a possible nod to 'rain'. The Japanese name is Todoseruga (トドゼルガ), perhaps from todo ('Steller sea lion'), Kaiser (German for 'emperor') and ga ('tusk').

### Design inspiration

Walrein seems to be modelled on a walrus, and its blue body and fluffy white fur may recall a breaking wave. The rings on its neck could come from the ribbon seal's markings. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Walrein evolves from Sealeo at level 44 and is the final stage of the line.

### In the games

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, a Walrein cares for baby Manaphy once it turns out to need the sea. In Legends: Arceus, Walrein appears along the Cobalt Coastlands, and its Pokédex says Hisui is well known for its broken tusks.

### In the anime

Walrein debuted in 'Fight for the Meteorite!' under Team Aqua Grunts. Katie's Walrein was her final Pokémon against Ash at the Ever Grande Conference in 'A Judgment Brawl', where Ash's Grovyle beat it.

### Fun facts

- With Thick Fat, Walrein takes only an eighth of normal damage from Ice moves; Bulbapedia notes that, apart from Dewgong, it is the only evolutionary line where every member can do this.
- Its base HP of 110 was the highest of any Ice type introduced in Generation III.
- Bulbapedia notes that the Sleep Style Dex shows Walrein asleep with one tusk stuck in the ground.
