Weavile is a [Dark](https://pokee.si/types/dark)/[Ice](https://pokee.si/types/ice)-type Pokémon, the Sharp Claw Pokémon, number 461 (#0461) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 34 kg.

Weavile is the Sharp Claw Pokémon, a Dark and Ice pack hunter that carves signs into trees, ice and boulders to talk to its friends. Pokédex lore puts the number of distinct signs at over 500.

## How to pronounce Weavile

Weavile is pronounced **WEE-vile**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Weavile is a pale grey, weasel-and-cat-like biped, 1.1 m (3 ft 7 in) tall and 34 kg (75.0 lb), with a red crown and collar of feathers, a thinner feather on each ear (smaller on females) and four fangs. The Pokédex says a scratch from its claws gives you frostbite.

### Behaviour

Weavile travels in groups of four or five, led by one of the pack. Its members leave each other signs clawed into trees, ice and boulders, and the Pokédex says their teamwork brings down prey as large as Mamoswine. A Legends: Arceus entry guesses that evolving gave it a bigger brain, and another says it no longer scraps over food. Bulbapedia notes it has been seen gesturing in its sleep.

### Habitat

It lives in cold, snowy regions. In Scarlet and Violet it is found on Paldea's Glaseado Mountain, in 5-star Tera Raids, and by evolving Sneasel in The Teal Mask. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

In Alola the Pokédex says its main food is Vulpix and Sandshrew, which the pack carefully shares out.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Pressure and, hidden, Pickpocket; unlike the rest of its family it has only two. It learns Night Slash, Dark Pulse, Ice Shard, Nasty Plot and Triple Axel. With 125 base Speed and 120 base Attack it is an extremely fast, hard-hitting attacker.

### Name origin

Weavile may combine 'weasel', 'weave', 'evil' and 'vile'. The Japanese name is Manyula (マニューラ), which may blend ma ('demon'), 'maneuver' and Nyula, the name of Sneasel.

### Design inspiration

Like Sneasel, Weavile may nod to the kamaitachi, a weasel yōkai blamed for mysterious cuts in cold weather. Bulbapedia notes its crown, collar and eye markings may echo ancient Egyptian fashion, and that its head feathers might recall war bonnets or the wind in kamaitachi stories. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Sneasel evolves into Weavile when it levels up at night while holding a Razor Claw.

### In the games

Weavile first appeared in Diamond and Pearl, where you get one by evolving Sneasel. In Legends: Arceus it appears in space-time distortions in the Obsidian Fieldlands.

### In the anime

Kidd Summers' Weavile fought Ash's Pikachu in the film 'Lucario and the Mystery of Mew'. Paul's Weavile lost to Cynthia's Garchomp in 'Top-Down Training!', and Alain's beat Ash's Noivern in the Lumiose Conference final.

### Fun facts

- It mirrors Gliscor: both are dual-type Generation IV Pokémon with a base stat total of 510, and both evolve at night holding a Razor-named item.
- Weavile and Sneasel are the only black Ice-type Pokémon, according to Bulbapedia.
- Its first appearance in the anime series was 'Duels of the Jungle', where two Weavile fought over who would lead a group of Weavile and Sneasel.

## Pokédex entries

This species corners prey as a pack, under the guidance of a leader. Weavile displays increased cunning, leading me to speculate that its evolution caused further brain development. *(Legends: Arceus)*

With its claws, it leaves behind signs for its friends to find. The number of distinct signs is said to be over 500. *(Shield)*

They attack their quarry in packs. Prey as large as Mamoswine easily fall to the teamwork of a group of Weavile. *(Sword)*

Thanks to its increased intelligence, scrapping over food is a thing of the past. A scratch from its claws will give you a case of frostbite! *(Ultra Moon)*

One Weavile will trip a Sandshrew and flip it over, and then another Weavile will deal the finishing blow with its sharp claws. *(Ultra Sun)*

They dwell in cold places. This Pokémon's main food source in Alola is Vulpix and Sandshrew, which they carefully divide among their group. *(Moon)*
