Whiskers Pokémon · Water/Ground-type

![Whiscash official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/340.webp)

Whiscash is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Ground](https://pokee.si/types/ground)-type Pokémon, the Whiskers Pokémon, number 340 (#0340) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 23.6 kg.

Whiscash is the Whiskers Pokémon, a bulky, territorial catfish whose thrashing was long blamed for earthquakes. The Pokédex says it really can sense real ones coming.

## How to pronounce Whiscash

Whiscash is pronounced **WIS-kash**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Whiscash said out loud:

In Japanese it is ナマズン (Namazun).

## Lore

### Biology

Whiscash is a chubby, dark blue catfish, 0.9 m long and 23.6 kg, with a yellow belly, a cavernous mouth, long yellow barbels on its cheeks and a yellow W-shaped mark on its forehead. Its eyesight is poor, so the Pokédex says it feels for vibrations through the water with its whiskers.

### Behaviour

Whiscash is extremely territorial and claims a whole swamp or large pond. If a foe comes near it thrashes about, and the Pokédex claims the tremors reach a radius of over 4.8 km (3 miles). It sleeps in mud by day and feeds through the night.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists the water's edge, with its nest at the bottom of a swamp or pond. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South, East, West and North Provinces and, in The Teal Mask, around Kitakami.

### Diet

The Pokédex says it will eat anything that is alive, gulping prey down whole, mud from the swamp floor included.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Oblivious and Anticipation, with Hydration hidden. The Legends: Arceus entry says it strikes the swamp bed with its tail fin to shake the ground and startle prey, and the Pearl entry says this thrashing taught it to foretell real quakes. Muddy Water and Earthquake are its main attacks, and its 110 base HP makes it very bulky.

### Name origin

Whiscash may blend 'whisker', 'moustache' and perhaps 'catfish'. The Japanese name is Namazun (ナマズン), which may come from 大鯰 (Ōnamazu), a legendary catfish, or from 鯰 (namazu, catfish).

### Design inspiration

Whiscash seems modelled on a catfish, chiefly Namazu, the Japanese mythical catfish said to cause earthquakes. Bulbapedia suggests Anticipation and Future Sight allude to the idea that real catfish grow agitated before quakes. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Evolves from Barboach at level 30.

### In the games

In Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, a wise Whiscash lives in Whiscash Pond and is the first to relay the Ninetales legend to everyone. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, and in Scarlet and Violet it appears in 4 star Tera Raid Battles. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Whiscash debuted in 'Whiscash and Ash', where Ash battled a giant one named Nero to get back his Badge Case, which it had swallowed. Juan's Whiscash beat Ash's Corphish in 'Eight Ain't Enough!' before losing to Swellow.

### Fun facts

- The fisherman Sullivan had hunted Nero for fifty years, but even a Master Ball failed: Nero swallowed the ball and swam away.
- In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire, a ball that drops into Whiscash's open mouth sends you to the Sealeo Bonus Field, while a hit from behind makes it angry and sets off an earthquake.
- In Pokémon Adventures, Mr. Briney's Whiscash predicts earthquakes so that he knows when it is safe to go fishing.

Strikes its caudal fin against the swamp bed to shake the ground and startle its prey. It will then swallow the fleeing prey whole. People mistook this behavior as the cause of earthquakes. *(Legends: Arceus)*

It claims a large swamp to itself. If a foe comes near it, it sets off tremors by thrashing around. *(HeartGold, SoulSilver, X, Shield)*

It makes its nest at the bottom of swamps. It will eat anything - if it is alive, Whiscash will eat it. *(FireRed, LeafGreen, Y, Sword)*

Its vision is not that good. It senses vibrations in the water with its whiskers to determine the location of its prey. *(Ultra Moon)*

Whiscash shakes the ground at high intensities to intimidate its opponents. It swallows its prey whole—along with mud from the swamp floor. *(Ultra Sun)*

Sighting Whiscash leaping from the water is believed to herald an earthquake. *(Moon)*
