# Wingull

Seagull Pokémon · Water/Flying-type

![Wingull official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/278.webp)

Wingull is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Seagull Pokémon, number 278 (#0278) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 9.5 kg.

Wingull is the Seagull Pokémon, a glider that rides updrafts over the sea without flapping. Fishermen watch where it circles, because the water below is sure to be thick with fish Pokémon.

## Lore

### Biology

Wingull is a small white gull, 0.6 m tall and 9.5 kg, with a big head that leaves it looking neckless, two triangular tufts on its crown and an orange beak whose tip is black and hooked. Its long, flat wings have light blue stripes near the tips, and three blue-tipped feathers form a fan-like tail above small orange feet. Hollow bones keep it light enough to glide.

### Behaviour

Wingull folds its wings only to rest, otherwise spreading them to catch updrafts and soar high. It tends to carry food and valuables in its bill and stash them in all sorts of spots, especially in winter.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it nests on steep cliffs by the sea. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South and West Paldean Sea, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

Its favourite food is Wishiwashi, which it hunts by circling above the ocean; Bulbapedia adds that it loves Finneon that jump at the surface.

### Powers

Wingull has Keen Eye or Hydration, which cures status conditions in rain, with Rain Dish hidden. It fights with Water Gun, Water Pulse, Wing Attack and Air Slash, and learns Hurricane at level 45. Base Speed is 85 and Special Attack 55, so it is quick but frail.

### Name origin

Wingull may combine 'wing' with 'gull'. The Japanese name is Camome (キャモメ), probably from 鴎 kamome, 'gull'.

### Design inspiration

Wingull looks modelled on a gull. Its long narrow wings recall the V-shaped bird silhouettes in simple drawings, and its soaring on air currents resembles an albatross. The two head tufts look like cat ears, which may nod to the black-tailed gull, called umineko ('sea cat') in Japanese. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Wingull evolves into Pelipper at level 25.

### In the games

Mr. Briney's Wingull, Peeko, is a minor NPC in the Hoenn games (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), where Wingull first appeared.

### In the anime

Peeko first appeared in 'On a Wingull and a Prayer!' and is close to Mr. Briney, the only human she really trusts. Goh caught a Wingull in 'The Cuteness Quotient!'.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Wingull's main predators are Talonflame, which snatches it with strong kicks, and Barraskewda, which jumps out of the water to bite any Wingull flying too low.
- Diamond and Pearl let players gather foreign Pokédex entries for only fourteen Pokémon, and Wingull was one of them.
- In 'Poetry Commotion!', Mr. Moore's Wingull punctures Team Rocket's balloon as they flee with Flannery's Torkoal.
