# Wishiwashi

Small Fry Pokémon · Water-type

![Wishiwashi official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/746.webp)

Wishiwashi is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)-type Pokémon, the Small Fry Pokémon, number 746 (#0746) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 0.3 kg.

Wishiwashi is the Small Fry Pokémon, a tiny and tasty Water type that is hopeless alone but, when threatened, calls its friends with shining tears and merges into a huge school. The Pokédex says even Gyarados flees from the 'demon of the sea'.

## How to pronounce Wishiwashi

Wishiwashi is pronounced **wish-ee-WOSH-ee**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Wishiwashi said out loud:

In Japanese it is ヨワシ (Yowashi).

## Lore

### Biology

On its own, Wishiwashi is 0.2 m long and 0.3 kg, a small sardine-like fish with a blue back, a grey belly and white teardrop marks along its flank. In School Form, a swarm arranges itself into one giant fish, 8.2 m long and 78.6 kg, with glowing eyes and a gaping mouth. The Pokédex claims the school's Water Gun is stronger than Hydro Pump.

### Behaviour

Alone, Wishiwashi is weak and a favourite meal for many predators, though the Pokédex says anyone bullying it gets a painful lesson. In trouble its eyes moisten and shine, a signal other Wishiwashi can see from almost 40 km (25 miles) away. Schools form to face strong foes and, the Pokédex says, scatter if the fish are hurt.

### Habitat

It swims in the sea and lakes: in Alola around the islands' routes, bays and Brooklet Hill, and in Galar in lakes such as Axewell and Miloch.

### Powers

Its Ability Schooling turns it into School Form when it enters battle at level 20 or higher with more than a quarter of its HP, and back when its HP falls to a quarter or below; no other Pokémon has Schooling. School Form jumps to 140 base Attack and Special Attack. It attacks with Water Gun, Brine, Dive, Aqua Tail and Hydro Pump.

### Name origin

Wishiwashi may combine 'wishy-washy' (weak), 'wash' (for its Water type) and iwashi ('sardine'). The Japanese name is Yowashi (ヨワシ), which may combine yowashi ('weak') or yowayowashii ('frail') with iwashi.

### Design inspiration

Its Solo Form resembles Pacific sardines, and its glowing eyes may come from flashlight fish. School Form shows some resemblance to a submarine and to the extinct armoured fish Dunkleosteus. These are fan readings.

### In the games

A Totem Wishiwashi school guards Lana's trial at Brooklet Hill in Sun and Moon, where the species first appeared, and the reward is the Waterium Z. It is in Sword and Shield too, but not in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

The Totem Wishiwashi appeared in 'Big Sky, Small Fry!', the debut of School Form, where Lana beat it with her Popplio and won the Waterium Z.

### Fun facts

- Solo Form's base stat total of 175 is the lowest of any Pokémon, and School Form's 620 is the biggest stat change of any species with multiple forms, Bulbapedia says.
- School Form weighs exactly 262 times as much as Solo Form, a ratio Bulbapedia suggests could be the number of fish in a school.
- Bulbapedia says it is the only Totem Pokémon that is not larger than usual.
- Pokémon: Magikarp Jump can show silhouettes of Wishiwashi schools in the pond background.

## Pokédex entries

When it senses danger, its eyes tear up. The sparkle of its tears signals other Wishiwashi to gather. *(Shield)*

Individually, they're incredibly weak. It's by gathering up into schools that they're able to confront opponents. *(Sword)*

When it's in a jam, its shining eyes attract others of its kind. The light from its eyes is visible almost 25 miles away. *(Ultra Moon)*

They're weak, so they move in schools. However, they can also often be seen all alone, having strayed from the school. *(Ultra Sun)*

It's awfully weak and notably tasty, so everyone is always out to get it. As it happens, anyone trying to bully it receives a painful lesson. *(Moon)*

When it's in trouble, its eyes moisten and begin to shine. The shining light attracts its comrades, and they stand together against their enemies. *(Sun)*
