# Wo-Chien

Ruinous Pokémon · Dark/Grass-type

![Wo-Chien official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/1001.webp)

Wo-Chien is a [Dark](https://pokee.si/types/dark)/[Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)-type Pokémon, the Ruinous Pokémon, number 1001 (#1001) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 74.2 kg.

Wo-Chien is a snail made of dead leaves that wears a row of old wooden tablets as its shell, and the Pokédex says the grudge of one punished writer brought it to life. It drains the life from plants so fiercely that forests wither on the spot.

## How to pronounce Wo-Chien

Wo-Chien is pronounced **woh-CHEN**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

In Japanese it is チオンジェン (Chionjen).

## Lore

### Biology

Wo-Chien is 1.5 m tall and weighs 74.2 kg. Its mossy dark-green body is draped in dead green and yellow leaves, with two pairs of long curling vines for eyestalks. The tablets curled along its back form its shell, and their writing has faded too far to read. Bulbapedia treats the tablets as its true form and the leafy body as one they built using their control over plants.

### Behaviour

Wo-Chien is a sealed, resentful Pokémon rather than a sociable one. The Pokédex says it was born from the resentment of someone punished for recording a king's wicked acts on wooden tablets, and Bulbapedia notes it is the only one of the four treasures of ruin given life by one individual's feeling rather than humanity's feelings in general. Its one recorded habit is draining the life-force of vegetation across a wide area.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no natural habitat. In Paldea it is sealed in the Grasswither Shrine, in South Province (Area One).

### Powers

Its Ability Tablets of Ruin lowers the Attack of every other Pokémon in battle. Its signature move Ruination, shared by all four treasures of ruin, deals damage equal to half of the target's remaining HP. It also learns Giga Drain, Leaf Storm, Foul Play and Knock Off. With base Special Defense 135 and Defense 100 it is built to outlast attackers.

### Name origin

Wo-Chien may join wō, the Chinese word for a snail, with jiǎn, bamboo slips. The Japanese name is Chionjen (チオンジェン), which may combine chóng (bug) with the same jiǎn.

### Design inspiration

Wo-Chien may be modelled on the decollate snail, a predatory Mediterranean land snail with a blunt, conical shell. Its shell echoes the bamboo or wooden slips used for writing in China before paper, and the four treasures of ruin may draw on the Four Perils of Chinese myth; Wo-Chien may correspond to Táowù, a monster whose name was also given to a lost history of the ancient state of Chu. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Wo-Chien is one of four Legendary Pokémon sealed in shrines across Paldea in Scarlet and Violet: pull out the eight stakes scattered around its area and the shrine unlocks, letting you challenge it. You can catch only one per save file. In Pokémon Masters EX it forms a sync pair with Archie, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

In the Pokémon Horizons episode HZ153, whose Japanese title translates as 'Paldea in Ruin: Resurrection', Coral and Sidian break the Grasswither Shrine's seal by accident, and Dot finds and confronts Wo-Chien.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia counts 92 wooden tablets on its in-game model, all of them visible at the peak of one animation.
- Of the four treasures of ruin, only Wo-Chien has Pokédex entries that contain no number.
- French and German spell its name Chongjian, the modern pinyin style, while English, Spanish and Italian keep the older Wade-Giles spelling.
- Bulbapedia says its Scarlet Pokédex entry may echo a Chinese idiom about sins too numerous to record on bamboo slips.
