Water Fish Pokémon · Water/Ground-type

![Wooper official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/194.webp)

Wooper is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Ground](https://pokee.si/types/ground)-type Pokémon, the Water Fish Pokémon, number 194 (#0194) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 8.5 kg.

Wooper is the Water Fish Pokémon, a mud-loving amphibian whose slimy coat stings bare hands. In Paldea it is a different animal: a brown Poison and Ground form that lost a territorial struggle and learned to live on land.

## How to pronounce Wooper

Wooper is pronounced **WOO-per**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Wooper is a blue, upright, armless amphibian with a big head, small black eyes and branching purple gills; males have more branches than females. It is 0.4 m (1'04") tall and weighs 8.5 kg (18.7 lbs). On land it wears a slimy, toxic film that stops its skin drying out, and the Pokédex says touching it barehanded causes a shooting pain.

### Behaviour

Wooper is timid and stays close to Quagsire. It lives in cold water, sleeping half buried in mud, and comes ashore in the cool of the evening to look for food. Paldean Wooper walks the wetlands in lines of three or four, because the Pokédex says it is dangerous to travel alone.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists Wooper as a water's-edge Pokémon that lives in cold water. In Scarlet and Violet the Paldean form lives around Paldea's lakes and swamps, the Johtonian form across Kitakami, and neither is in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Damp, which stops Self-Destruct and Explosion, Water Absorb, which turns Water moves into healing, and the hidden Unaware, which ignores a foe's stat changes. It fights with Water Gun, Mud Shot and Earthquake. Paldean Wooper is Poison and Ground, with bone-shaped gills; it swaps Damp for Poison Point, and Bulbapedia says it can unleash poison through its hardened gills. With base HP 55 and Speed 15 it is slow.

### Name origin

Wooper may come from 'wooper looper' (ウーパールーパー, ūpārūpā), the Japanese marketing name that started a craze for pet axolotls. Its Japanese name, Upah (ウパー), may come from the same word.

### Design inspiration

Wooper looks like a larval salamander, and its feathery gills point to the axolotl in particular. Paldean Wooper's skull-and-crossbones gills may nod to the Iberian ribbed newt, a poisonous salamander. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Wooper evolves into Quagsire at level 20, but Paldean Wooper becomes Clodsire at level 20.

### In the games

In Scarlet and Violet the Paldean form is common in the wild and in 1 star Tera Raids, and trading a Paldean Wooper in Cascarrafa gets you a Johtonian one. Wooper debuted in Gold and Silver, on Route 32 and by surfing in Union Cave and the Ruins of Alph.

### In the anime

Wooper is a friend of the Pichu Brothers in the Pikachu short films, starting with 'Pikachu & Pichu'. Others live in the marsh Ash's Goodra came from, first seen in a flashback in 'A Slippery Encounter!'.

### Fun facts

- Its base stat total of 210 is the lowest of any Ground type, a record it shares with its own Paldean form.
- Bulbapedia says Paldean Wooper was the lone Paldean form shown off before Scarlet and Violet came out.
- Bulbapedia lists Wooper, with Scizor, among the first Pokémon to have gender differences revealed.
