# Xatu

Mystic Pokémon · Psychic/Flying-type

Xatu is a [Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Mystic Pokémon, number 178 (#0178) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 15 kg.

Xatu is the Mystic Pokémon, a totem-pole-like bird that stands motionless all day because, the Pokédex says, it sees the past and the future at once. People believe it is afraid of what it has foreseen.

## Lore

### Biology

Xatu is 1.5 m tall and weighs 15 kg. It is a green, trogon-like bird whose long white wings, tipped in red and black, cover most of its front and hide markings like red eyes. It has a slightly hooked beak, two long red crest feathers and two-toed feet. Males have an extra set of yellow stripes.

### Behaviour

Xatu stays rooted to one spot, watching the sun move across the sky, and the Pokédex says that once it starts meditating at sunrise the whole day passes before it moves. One entry says the future is visible to its right eye and the past to its left; another says it has no wish to change the future it sees.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists forests, and Bulbapedia says Xatu is believed to live in the forests of South America. Today it can be found in Sword and Shield's Wild Area and Max Lair.

### Powers

In Sword and Shield Xatu comes with Air Slash and Tailwind, then learns Night Shade, Psychic, Wish and Future Sight, a delayed attack that suits a seer. Beyond Synchronize and Early Bird, its hidden Ability is Magic Bounce. With 95 base Special Attack and Speed, it is a fast special attacker.

### Name origin

Xatu is from 'xat', a kind of carved Native American pole, and possibly Natu. The Japanese name is Natio (ネイティオ), which may blend 'native', Naty and indio, the Spanish and Italian word for a Native American.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Xatu as a resplendent quetzal with touches of a Native American totem pole or kachina doll. Its sun-watching may echo sun gazing, a meditation the Aztec and Maya used, Bulbapedia says, to gain supernatural power. These are fan readings.

Xatu evolves from Natu at level 25.

### In the games

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team, Xatu is a wise adviser who makes its home on the Hill of the Ancients. It debuted in Gold and Silver and is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet, Legends: Arceus and Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Three Xatu debuted in 'Xatu the Future', helping a forecaster with her weather predictions. In 'Me, Myself and Time', a woman from the future named Calista owns a Xatu that helps shield Ash and the present-day Calista from Team Rocket.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Jeff Kalles, a helper on the English names of many Generation II Pokémon, suggested Xatu, the X reflecting a wish to cover every letter of the alphabet.
- Bulbapedia's list of Pulseman references says Xatu resembles a bird enemy from stage 2 of Pulseman, another Game Freak game, with a nearly identical colour scheme and shape.
- In Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, Xatu's Appraisal in Treasure Town opens Treasure Boxes for 150 Poké each.
