Xerneas is a [Fairy](https://pokee.si/types/fairy)-type Pokémon, the Life Pokémon, number 716 (#0716) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the [Kalos](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kalos) region. It is 3 m tall and weighs 215 kg.

Xerneas is the Life Pokémon, a towering Fairy-type stag whose antlers shine in seven colours when it shares everlasting life. The Pokédex says it once slept for a thousand years as a tree before reviving, and it is the mascot of Pokémon X.

## How to pronounce Xerneas

Xerneas is pronounced **ZUR-nee-ahs**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Xerneas is a 3 m, 215 kg stag with four pairs of branching antlers. Its body is black with a blue stripe along the back and a short bushy tail; its head and neck are blue, and its eyes have X-shaped pupils. Blade-like trim runs down each leg to a point below the hoof. The Pokédex says its horns glow in seven colours when it is sharing everlasting life.

### Behaviour

Legends say Xerneas can share eternal life. Bulbapedia adds that the ancient people of Kalos respected it for giving life, and that one legend has it saving wounded Pokémon in an ancient war. It is said to look after the land together with Yveltal, balancing life against death.

### Habitat

No Pokédex entry names a habitat. In New Pokémon Snap it lives in the Ruins of Remembrance. It cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet, and in Legends: Z-A there is a single Xerneas in Wild Zone 11 in Jaune District.

### Powers

Its only Ability, Fairy Aura, boosts Fairy moves for every Pokémon on the field. It learns Geomancy, a move Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon can learn, along with Moonblast, Horn Leech and Close Combat. It has two modes: pale blue Neutral Mode when travelling, and pale gold Active Mode with multicoloured antler growths and glowing back spots in battle, with no difference in stats. Base HP 126 and Attack and Special Attack 131 make it a bulky mixed attacker.

### Name origin

Xerneas starts with X, the letter it is shaped like, and may also draw on cervus ('deer' in Latin), Cernunnos, the Ceryneian Hind and アース āsu ('earth'). The Japanese name is ゼルネアス, romanised Xerneas.

### Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori began the design of Xerneas and Yveltal, hit artist's block and, for the first time, passed the work to Yusuke Ohmura, who developed them before returning them to Sugimori to finish. Xerneas resembles the extinct deer Eucladoceros, and Bulbapedia suggests Norse stags such as Eikþyrnir or the Celtic horned god Cernunnos. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Xerneas is the mascot of Pokémon X, its first game; fans call it, Yveltal and Zygarde the aura trio. It also appears in Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon and New Pokémon Snap. In Legends: Z-A it is an encounter you can find in the base game.

### In the anime

In the film Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction, Xerneas gives Diancie its Fairy Aura, calms Yveltal, and turns into a tree. Its series debut was a silhouette in 'Foggy Pokémon Orienteering!'.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia singles Xerneas out as the one game mascot whose signature move does no damage: Geomancy is a status move.
- In Sword and Shield's Pokémon Camp, Xerneas is the only Pokémon that reacts badly when the player shakes the Poké Toy.
- Before Generation IX, Xerneas alone had the Ability Fairy Aura; Mega Floette has it too in the poke.si data.
- A Shiny Xerneas received by event has an unfinished Mystery Gift preview, with the multicoloured antler additions missing or plain blue.
