Yveltal is a [Dark](https://pokee.si/types/dark)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Destruction Pokémon, number 717 (#0717) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the [Kalos](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kalos) region. It is 5.8 m tall and weighs 203 kg.

Yveltal is the Destruction Pokémon, a vast Dark and Flying bird-dragon that, the Pokédex says, drains the life from everything around it when its own life ends, then wraps itself in a cocoon once more. It is the mascot of Pokémon Y.

## How to pronounce Yveltal

## Lore

### Biology

Yveltal is 5.8 m tall and weighs 203 kg. Its back is black with white spots on the wings, while its chest, head and neck are bright red, marked with branching black lines. Its snout is pointed like a beak, its eyes are blue, a horn curves forward above each eye and a grey ruff circles its neck. Each wing and its tail end in five black claws. The Pokédex says it fans out its wings and tail feathers, which glow red, to absorb life force.

### Behaviour

Bulbapedia says ancient Kalos people feared Yveltal, which turns up during conflicts and drains the life of whatever it meets. It can drag itself along the ground on its wings and talons like a bat, then push off back into the sky. The Pokédex says it ends its life by absorbing everything living around it and wrapping itself in a cocoon.

### Habitat

No Pokédex entry names a habitat. It cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet, and in Legends: Z-A there is a single Yveltal in Rouge District's Rouge Sector 2.

### Powers

Its only Ability, Dark Aura, boosts Dark moves for every Pokémon on the field. It learns Oblivion Wing, which Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon can learn, along with Phantom Force, Foul Play and Hurricane. Base HP 126 and Attack and Special Attack 131 make it a strong mixed attacker, with the same stats as Xerneas.

### Name origin

Yveltal starts with Y, the letter it is shaped like, and may come from 'yvel' (a Middle English form of 'evil') plus quetzal or talon. The Japanese name is イベルタル, romanised Yveltal.

### Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori and Yusuke Ohmura designed it together with Xerneas, and its silhouette follows the letter Y. Bulbapedia compares it to the long-tailed widowbird and to scavenging birds such as crows and vultures, and notes a resemblance to the fungus known as devil's fingers. Possible myth links, such as the Celtic Morrigan or the Norse eagle Hræsvelgr, are fan readings.

### In the games

Yveltal is the mascot of Pokémon Y, its first game; fans call it, Xerneas and Zygarde the aura trio. It is a playable ranged attacker in Pokémon UNITE. In Legends: Z-A it is found as an encounter in the base game.

### In the anime

Yveltal wakes in the film Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction and turns people and Pikachu to stone before Xerneas calms it. Its series debut was a flashback in 'The Legend of X, Y, and Z!'.

### Fun facts

- Before Generation IX, it was the only known Pokémon that could learn Focus Blast by levelling up.
- In the Pokémon Generations episode 'The Beauty Eternal', Team Flare captures Yveltal for the next phase of a plan it calls 'Project Y'.
- Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS lets Yveltal fly across the background of its Prism Tower stage now and then.
