![Zekrom official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/644.webp)

Zekrom is a [Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)/[Electric](https://pokee.si/types/electric)-type Pokémon, the Deep Black Pokémon, number 644 (#0644) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 2.9 m tall and weighs 345 kg.

Zekrom is the Deep Black Pokémon, a thunderstorm-coloured dragon with a generator in its tail powerful enough, the Pokédex says, to scorch the world. Unova's legends say it was once one dragon with Reshiram, and it backs people who dream of an ideal world.

## Lore

### Biology

Zekrom is a black, armoured dragon, 2.9 m tall and 345 kg, with a thundercloud-like crest tipped in pale blue and red-and-white eyes. Its wings are padded and webbed, and its tail is a spiked cone holding the generator. It has no gender. Bulbapedia says its tail lights up blue when its emotions surge.

### Behaviour

Zekrom is a figure of legend rather than a Pokémon people meet. The Pokédex says it hides inside lightning clouds as it flies across Unova, and that its tail makes electricity; when the inside of that tail spins like a motor, it blasts everything around it with bolts. Myth says it razes the kingdoms of people who lose the righteousness in their hearts. Bulbapedia adds that if its body is destroyed it becomes the Dark Stone, which a hero who believes in ideals can wake again.

### Habitat

Zekrom has no listed habitat; Unova's legends place it in the region's distant past. In The Indigo Disk, one waits in Paldea's South Province once you take a Zekrom Treat from Snacksworth, and it otherwise arrives by trade or HOME. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its only Ability is Teravolt, which lets its moves ignore Abilities that would block them; only Zekrom and Black Kyurem can have it. Its signature move is Bolt Strike, learnt at level 88 in Scarlet and Violet, and it also learns Fusion Bolt. The DNA Splicers fuse it with Kyurem into Black Kyurem. With base Attack 150 and Defense 120, it is a heavy-hitting physical attacker.

### Name origin

Zekrom comes from the Japanese 黒 kuro, 'black'. Ken Sugimori has said the 'Ze' was chosen as a harder, stronger sound than Reshiram's 'Re', for a powerful character. The Japanese name is Zekrom (ゼクロム).

### Design inspiration

Zekrom's Japanese category means 'Black Yin Pokémon', one half of the yin and yang pairing that Bulbapedia sees in it and Reshiram. Its tail is described as based on an electric turbine, its crest seems to echo a thundercloud, and its body may blend a European dragon with a theropod dinosaur. Junichi Masuda has said it was meant to have four hands. These are fan readings except where a developer is named.

### In the games

Zekrom is the cover Legendary of Pokémon White, where you awaken it as your own near the end of the story; in Black a rival uses it against you. In Black 2, N's Zekrom returns, and after the story you can battle him again and catch it at Dragonspiral Tower.

### In the anime

Zekrom debuted in the opening of the Unova series' first episode, 'In The Shadow of Zekrom!', and later zapped Ash's Pikachu so hard that it could no longer use Electric moves. Another bolt in 'Enter Iris and Axew!' restored them.

### Fun facts

- At 345 kg, Zekrom outweighs every other Pokémon introduced in Generation V.
- Bulbapedia says Zekrom is Ken Sugimori's favourite Pokémon from Black and White.
- Reshiram and Zekrom were the first Pokémon given Full Art cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, in the Black and White set.
- Both also appeared in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2010, alongside Pikachu and a Poké Ball.
