How we know
The counts and records are worked out from the pokee.si Pokédex data every time the site is built, so they stay right when new Pokémon arrive. A second program then recalculates every number from the raw data and stops the build if even one is different.
Nothing is made up. A fact that cannot be worked out from the data has to be checked against Bulbapedia first, and its card says so. Fan nicknames such as “pseudo-legendary” are marked as fan terms.
