Lore

Biology

Amoonguss resembles a mushroom, standing 0.6 m tall and weighing 10.5 kg, with a bulky grey stem-like body, fierce eyes and two arms. The caps on its head and both arms look like Poké Balls, and the head cap has a few warts.

Behaviour

Amoonguss rarely moves and prefers to stand near Poké Balls that have been left on the ground. It lures prey by dancing and swaying its arm caps, and it also puffs poisonous spores at foes. The Pokédex says unwashed spores grow into mushrooms wherever they land.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it prefers damp places, and Bulbapedia says it hides in long grass with only its cap showing, usually close to water. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the North Province (Area Two) and Socarrat Trail.

Diet

Bulbapedia describes it as a carnivore.

Powers

Amoonguss has Effect Spore, with Regenerator hidden, which heals it by a third of its HP when it switches out. It can put foes to sleep with Spore at level 54, redirect attacks to itself with Rage Powder and heal with Giga Drain. Base HP of 114 and Speed of 30 make it a slow, durable supporter.

Name origin

Amoonguss may blend 'amanita' (a mushroom genus) with 'fungus' or 'humongous'. The Japanese name is Morobareru (モロバレル), from moro ni (completely) and bareru (to be exposed), a nod to how it no longer convincingly passes for a Poké Ball.

Evolution notes

Amoonguss evolves from Foongus at level 39 and does not evolve further.

In the games

Amoonguss hides as a fake item on Route 10 in Black and White, where it debuted. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 5 and 6 star Tera Raid Battles, and in Legends: Z-A it is found in the wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

James's Amoonguss debuted in 'New Places... Familiar Faces!', was handed to Giovanni as proof that Team Rocket had achieved something in Unova, and returned to James in 'Rocket Revengers!'. In 'Team Plasma's Pokémon Power Plot!' Colress used several as test specimens until Pikachu's Thunderbolt stopped them.

Fun facts

  • Brute Bonnet, a Paradox Pokémon, resembles Amoonguss, though Bulbapedia notes that the games give conflicting accounts of how the two are related.
  • In 'Foggy Pokémon Orienteering!' an Amoonguss woken by Bonnie and Pikachu got so angry that it used Spore on them, and later did the same to Ash and his other friends.
  • In Pokémon Generations, Team Plasma Grunts send out several Amoonguss against Iris and the Gym Leaders of Unova in the fight at N's Castle.
