Lore
Biology
Armarouge is a humanoid Pokémon, 1.5 m (4'11") tall and 85 kg (187.4 lbs), with a black body, red legs and mitt-like red hands. Its red head has sharp yellow ears and a flame on top like the plume of a knight's helmet, and a black mask with three holes covers its face. It wears aged yellow-and-red armour, with large yellow pauldrons floating above its shoulders. The Pokédex says psychic and fire energy have toughened that armour.
Behaviour
The Pokédex calls Armarouge incredibly loyal, and Bulbapedia adds that it believes in fighting fair and takes on any foe head-on. Even so, the Legends: Z-A Pokédex says it keeps slipping away from its Trainer to train alone and build up its psychic energy.
Habitat
Neither the Pokédex nor Bulbapedia gives a habitat. In Scarlet and Violet you can get one by evolving Charcadet, and it appears in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles.
Powers
Its armour lets it fire blazing projectiles: it joins its pauldrons into a cannon for Armor Cannon, which lowers its own Defense and Special Defense afterwards and, Bulbapedia says, is a move only Armarouge is known to learn. Its Abilities are Flash Fire and, hidden, Weak Armor, which trades Defense for Speed when a physical move hits it. It also uses Psyshock, Mystical Fire, Calm Mind and Flamethrower. With a base Special Attack of 125 and Defense of 100 it is a sturdy special attacker.
Name origin
Armarouge may combine arma or armadura (weapon, armour in Spanish, Portuguese and Italian) with rouge, French for red. The Japanese name is Gurenarma (グレンアルマ), which may pair guren (crimson) with the same arma roots.
Design inspiration
Armarouge's design could draw on medieval tales of European knights and chivalry. Bulbapedia floats the legend of Wilfred the Hairy, a Spanish knight famous for his golden armour, as a source for its red markings. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Charcadet evolves into Armarouge when an Auspicious Armor is used on it, which uses the armour up.
In the games
Armarouge is a Charcadet evolution introduced in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A that happens in the Mega Dimension DLC.
In the anime
Liko's Armarouge debuted in 'Operation Infiltration!', when her Charcadet evolved wearing the Auspicious Armor from 'Mochi Mayhem!'. It made its first Terastallization, into the Fire type, in 'The Training Royale!'.
