Bastiodon official artwork

Bastiodon is a Rock/Steel-type Pokémon, the Shield Pokémon, number 411 (#0411) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the Sinnoh region. It is 1.3 m tall and weighs 149.5 kg.

Bastiodon wears a castle wall for a face. The Pokédex says that when a herd lines up side by side, nothing can break through, which is how they shielded their young; its one flaw is that it is helpless from behind.

Lore

Biology

Bastiodon is a dark grey, ceratopsian-like Pokémon whose square head carries four cream-yellow, window-like spots and four blunt tusks along the lower jaw. It is 1.3 m tall and weighs 149.5 kg. The Pokédex compares its face to diamond in one entry and steel in another, and says the facial bones are so large and hard that researchers mistook them for a spine until a Bastiodon was successfully restored.

Behaviour

Despite its rough look, Bastiodon is a docile, caring herd animal. Its fossils are often found alongside those of Rampardos, and the Pokédex says they seem to have fought to the finish.

Habitat

The Legends: Arceus entry admits its natural habitat is still unknown. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 4 star Tera Raid Battles in The Indigo Disk, can be made by evolving Shieldon in Violet, and is otherwise a trade.

Diet

The Pokédex says it feeds on grass and berries.

Powers

Its Abilities are Sturdy and, hidden, Soundproof. It learns Metal Burst at level 43, Iron Head at 51 and Heavy Slam at 58. With base Special Defense 138 and only 30 Speed, it is built to absorb hits rather than dodge them.

Name origin

Bastiodon may combine 'bastion' and -don, the ending of many dinosaur names, from the Greek for 'tooth'; it may also allude to the Bastille. The Japanese name is Torideps (トリデプス), possibly from 砦 toride ('fortress') and Triceratops or -ops.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia sees a ceratopsian dinosaur, with a head like Chasmosaurus. The bony shield looks like a castle wall, and with its mouth shut the horns and tusks line up like a portcullis, the gate of a fortress.

Evolution notes

Shieldon becomes Bastiodon at level 30, and Bastiodon learns Block as it evolves.

In the games

Bastiodon is the signature Pokémon of Canalave Gym Leader Byron, introduced in Diamond and Pearl, where his team ends with it. At the Pokémon World Tournament in Black 2 and White 2, Byron always leads with it. It appears in space-time distortions in Legends: Arceus and is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Byron's Bastiodon debuted in 'Ancient Family Matters!', where its battle with Roark's Rampardos was cut short by Team Rocket. In 'Dealing With Defensive Types!' it beat Ash's Chimchar, then lost to Gliscor.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says the castle wall in Pokémon Battle Revolution's Courtyard Colosseum resembles a Bastiodon's head.
  • Its base Defense of 168 is the highest of any Generation IV Pokémon.
  • In Pokémon Masters EX, Byron forms a sync pair with his Bastiodon.

Pokédex entries

Its face is sturdy—as strong as diamond—and this hardness offers a very stable defense. Much about this species is still unknown, such as its natural habitat. (Legends: Arceus)

This Pokémon is from roughly 100 million years ago. Its terrifyingly tough face is harder than steel. (Ultra Moon)

The bones of its face are huge and hard, so they were mistaken for its spine until after this Pokémon was successfully restored. (Ultra Sun)

It lived in the same environments as Rampardos. Their fossils have been found together— seemingly from after they'd fought to the finish. (Moon)

While it can guard against any sort of attack from the front, it is left without recourse when attacked from behind. (Sun)

Any frontal attack is repulsed. It is a docile Pokémon that feeds on grass and berries. (Diamond, Y, Alpha Sapphire)
