Braixen official artwork

Braixen is a Fire-type Pokémon, the Fox Pokémon, number 654 (#0654) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 14.5 kg.

Braixen keeps a twig in its tail fur and sets it alight just by pulling it out, then waves the burning stick like a wand to signal allies or power its attacks. It is where Kalos's Fire starter begins to look like a witch.

How to pronounce Braixen

Braixen is pronounced BRAYK-sun. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Braixen is a bipedal fox, 1.0 m tall and 14.5 kg. Its fur is mostly yellow, with black legs, white arms and face, a small white mane over its chest and long orange tufts in its ears, and the fur at its hips sweeps out like a skirt. The twig lives in its bushy tail, and the Pokédex says friction against the tail fur sets it on fire the moment it is drawn.

Behaviour

Braixen uses fire as a language. The Pokédex says it waves the burning twig to signal its allies and traces circles in the air with its burning twig to warn of danger. Bulbapedia adds that holding the stick also helps to calm it down.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or Pokémon HOME transfer, or by evolving Fennekin in The Indigo Disk. In Legends: Z-A you evolve it from Fennekin, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds wild ones.

Powers

Braixen learns Ember and Flame Charge early, then Fire Spin, Flamethrower and Fire Blast, plus Psychic moves such as Psyshock and Psychic. Its Ability is Blaze, with Magician hidden. Base Special Attack 90 and Speed 73 make it a balanced special attacker.

Name origin

Braixen may combine 'braise' (French for hot charcoal) with 'vixen', and could also nod to bruxa (Portuguese for 'witch') or 'brazen'. The Japanese name is Tairenar (テールナー), possibly from 'tail' and renard, French for 'fox'.

Design inspiration

Braixen resembles a fennec fox with the witchy air of kitsune-mochi in Japanese folklore. Its twig looks like a mage's wand, and tucked into its tail it makes the whole tail resemble a witch's broomstick. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Braixen evolves from Fennekin at level 16 and into Delphox at level 36.

In the games

Braixen is a Battle Pokémon you can play as in Pokkén Tournament, where its Burst Attack is Psyfirecracker. It first appeared in X and Y, where it lives in the Fire Friend Safari.

In the anime

Aria's Braixen debuted in 'Day Three Blockbusters!', already evolved from her Fennekin. Serena's Fennekin became a Braixen in 'Battling with Elegance and a Big Smile!', during a Double Battle against Aria's Delphox and Aromatisse.

Fun facts

  • In Japanese, the Fox Pokémon category is written in hiragana for the Vulpix and Nickit lines but in katakana for Fennekin's, according to Bulbapedia.
  • In the anime, Ash's Pokédex says Braixen combines the flame from its twig with its fiery breath to make a massive Fire Spin.
  • The opening of the film 'Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel' shows all three Kalos starters evolving, with Braixen as the middle step.
