Lore
Biology
Clefairy is a chubby, pink, vaguely star-shaped Pokémon with large brown-tipped ears, black oval eyes and a dark pink oval on each cheek. One small pointed tooth pokes out of the upper left of its mouth. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 7.5 kg. Its tiny butterfly-shaped wings cannot fly it, but they store moonlight that lets it float.
Behaviour
Clefairy is shy and seldom comes down from its mountains. On full-moon nights groups gather to dance, and the Pokédex says the ground around them is wrapped in an abnormal magnetic field. At dawn the tired dancers go home and sleep nestled against each other. One entry warns that careless Trainers who flaunt one may attract thieves.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists it as a mountain Pokémon that appears in quiet mountain areas on full-moon nights. In Legends: Z-A it is found in Wild Zone 19, and in Scarlet and Violet in The Teal Mask's Kitakami.
Powers
Cute Charm can infatuate attackers that make contact, Magic Guard blocks indirect damage, and its hidden Ability is Friend Guard. It can call on Metronome, Moonblast, Follow Me and Meteor Mash. With base HP 70 and Special Defense 65 as its best stats, it is a modest support Pokémon.
Name origin
Clefairy may combine 'clef', the musical symbol, with 'fairy'. The Japanese name is Pippi (ピッピ), which may repeat the first syllable of 'pixie'.
Design inspiration
Ken Sugimori designed Clefairy, and Bulbapedia says an early version of it was drawn for the Capsule Monsters pitch that Game Freak showed Nintendo. It seems to draw on fairies and pixies, and its star-shaped body and rumoured space origin may nod to extraterrestrial life. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Clefairy evolves from Cleffa through high friendship and into Clefable with a Moon Stone.
In the games
Clefairy lives on Mt. Moon in Red and Blue. Whitney uses one in Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, and in the Johto-based games Clefairy dance at Mt. Moon Square each Monday night.
In the anime
In 'Clefairy Tales', a spaceship of thieving Clefairy crash-lands near Viridian City, which makes them extraterrestrial in the anime, and Cleffa meets Ash's Phanpy in the follow-up 'Wish Upon a Star Shape'. In 'A Goldenrod Opportunity', Whitney's Clefairy sees its Metronome fail against Ash's Cyndaquil.
