Lore

Biology

Darmanitan is a squat, ape-like Fire type, 1.3 m and 92.9 kg, with a tan face and fiery brows. In Zen Mode its fur and skin turn blue and its limbs fuse into a round Daruma doll shape. Galarian Darmanitan is an Ice type, 1.7 m and 120 kg, with a thick white coat and a giant snowball on its head.

Behaviour

The Sword entry says its thick arms can punch a dump truck to pieces. Galarian Darmanitan is gentle and timid, and Bulbapedia says it pretends to be a snowman near people. On blizzard days it comes down to stash food in its snowball, and it freezes the snowball before a headbutt.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives Unovan Darmanitan no habitat, and in Black and White it lives in the Desert Resort. Galarian Darmanitan has adapted to Galar's cold. Neither is available in Scarlet, Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Sheer Force is its usual Ability and Zen Mode its hidden one: when its HP falls to half or below it becomes a Fire and Psychic type whose Attack of 140 and Special Attack of 30 swap places. Galarian Darmanitan has Gorilla Tactics, which boosts Attack by 50% but locks it into one move. It hits with Flare Blitz and Hammer Arm.

Name origin

Darmanitan may combine 'Dharma' (a spelling of Daruma) and 'orangutan'. The Japanese name is Hihidaruma (ヒヒダルマ), possibly from hi ('fire' or 'scarlet'), hihi ('baboon'), Daruma and hidaruma ('in flames').

Design inspiration

Darmanitan is modelled on a Daruma doll, and Bulbapedia says the dolls burned at the ceremony its designer attended happened to resemble gorillas. Galarian Darmanitan may mix a snowman with a yeti, which is a fan reading.

Evolution notes

Unovan Darumaka evolves into Darmanitan at level 35, and Galarian Darumaka does so with an Ice Stone.

In the games

Five wild Darmanitan in Black and White's Desert Resort, where the species debuted, all have Zen Mode. Galarian Darmanitan arrived in Sword and Shield, and Bulbapedia says Detective Pikachu can ride one in Detective Pikachu Returns.

In the anime

Darmanitan debuted in 'Saving Darmanitan From the Bell!', where it entered Zen Mode to hold a loose clock-tower bell in the air with Psychic. In 'Raid Battle in The Ruins!' Goh caught one guarding the Colossus Ruins.

Fun facts

  • Zen Mode Galarian Darmanitan has the highest base Speed of any Fire type, 135, and no other species shares its Ice and Fire typing.
  • Galarian Zen Mode Darmanitan has an Attack of 160 against a Special Attack of 30, a 130-point gap that Bulbapedia says is the largest among Pokémon that have not Mega Evolved.
  • Bulbapedia says Galarian Darmanitan was the first regional form to get an extra form of its own.
