Lore

Biology

Dewgong is a sleek, furry pinniped with a pure white body, black eyes and nose, two tusks and a long horn on its head that cuts through thick ice floes. It is 1.7 m long and weighs 120 kg. Its streamlined shape and strong tail let it cruise at a steady 8 knots even through freezing water, and the Pokédex says it stores thermal energy in its body.

Behaviour

Dewgong thrives in the cold and gets livelier as the temperature drops. It sleeps through the day on bitterly cold ice or in shallow water, then hunts at night. After a meal it basks in the sun on the beach, which warms its body and helps its digestion. The Ultra Sun entry says it is especially fond of Wishiwashi.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list puts Dewgong in the sea, and Bulbapedia says it lives on drifting icebergs. In Scarlet and Violet it is not wild in Paldea or Kitakami, but The Indigo Disk's Polar Biome has it.

Powers

Its Abilities are Thick Fat and Hydration, with Ice Body hidden. Dewgong freezes foes with Ice Beam, Aurora Beam and Icy Wind, strikes quickly with Aqua Jet, and learns the one-hit knockout Sheer Cold. With 90 HP and 95 Special Defense it is a durable, defensive swimmer.

Name origin

Dewgong may combine 'dew' with 'dugong', a marine mammal. The Japanese name is Jugon (ジュゴン), taken from the Japanese word for dugong.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia links Dewgong to harp seal pups, going by its white fur and icy home, and notes that its body also resembles a mermaid. Its horn may come from a narwhal and its tusks from a walrus. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Dewgong evolves from Seel at level 34.

In the games

Dewgong's biggest role is on Lorelei's Elite Four team, where it leads at level 54 in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), its debut games; Pryce also uses one at the Mahogany Gym in Gold, Silver and Crystal. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

The Cerulean Gym's Seel became the first Dewgong seen in the anime in 'The Misty Mermaid'. In Mewtwo Strikes Back, Neesha's Dewgong carries her to New Island before Mewtwo clones it, and Goh catches one in 'A Test in Paradise!' that falls in love easily.

Fun facts

  • In the Red and Green beta, its English name was Manaty, which sounds like manatee.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Lorelei's Dewgong combines Ice Beam with her Cloyster's Spike Cannon.
  • In the anime, Pryce's Dewgong beat Ash's Phanpy in an unofficial battle before Ash's Cyndaquil beat it in his official Gym battle.
