Lore

Biology

Electrode is an upside-down Poké Ball, white on top and red below, with black slit eyes, heavy eyebrows and a smile. It is 1.2 m across and weighs 66.6 kg. The Pokédex says it stores electricity under very high pressure, and that it can drift on the wind when bloated with charge.

Behaviour

Electrode explodes with little or no provocation, and one entry says that when it has too much electricity and nothing to do, it explodes for fun. The more energy it stores, the faster it moves and the likelier it is to burst.

Habitat

Power plants, where it feeds on newly generated electricity. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in West Province Area Three and in 4-star Tera Raid Battles, and Hisuian Electrode arrives through Pokémon HOME. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

It eats electricity. The Pokédex says crowds of them at power plants cause massive blackouts, and on stormy days one can eat so much that it bursts.

Powers

It has Soundproof, Static and the hidden Aftermath. A base Speed of 150 lets it strike first with Thunderbolt, Volt Switch or Foul Play, or go out with Explosion. Hisuian Electrode is an Electric and Grass type with a wooden top; it stores chlorophyll energy as well as electricity, and the Pokédex says it can unleash current equal to 20 lightning bolts.

Name origin

Electrode may combine 'electric' and 'explode', with a pun on the electrode through which current passes. Its Japanese name is Marumine (マルマイン), perhaps maru ('circle') plus 'mine'.

Design inspiration

Electrode may draw on ball lightning, which suits its round shape and drifting, and on bombs or land mines. Voltorb's angry look and Electrode's smile may personify negative and positive charge, and they are swapped in the Hisuian forms. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Electrode is the final stage; Voltorb evolves into it at level 30, or with a Leaf Stone if it is Hisuian.

In the games

Lt. Surge has an Electrode in FireRed, LeafGreen and the Let's Go games, and Iono uses one in every rematch in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Arceus you challenge Lord Electrode of the Coronet Highlands.

In the anime

Electrode debuted in 'The Flame Pokémon-athon', as a racer in the Big P Pokémon Race. In 'Navel Maneuvers', Danny's Electrode uses its weight to help steer him down a mountain.

Fun facts

  • In Generations I and II, Electrode is the only Electric type that learns no Electric move by levelling up.
  • In Red, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen you can have a level 3 Electrode by evolving a Viridian Forest Pikachu and swapping it with the old man in Cinnabar's Pokémon Lab.
  • Hidenori Kusaka, author of the Pokémon Adventures manga, draws Electrode as his stand-in in the comment boxes.

Pokédex entries

The tissue on the surface of its body is curiously similar in composition to an Apricorn. When irritated, this Pokémon lets loose an electric current equal to 20 lightning bolts. (Legends: Arceus)

Stores electrical energy inside its body. Even the slightest shock could trigger a huge explosion. (Yellow, Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

One of Electrode's characteristics is its attraction to electricity. It is a problematical Pokémon that congregates mostly at electrical power plants to feed on electricity that has just been generated. (Sapphire, Alpha Sapphire)

Electrode eats electricity in the atmosphere. On days when lightning strikes, you can see this Pokémon exploding all over the place from eating too much electricity. (Ruby, Omega Ruby)

It stores an overflowing amount of electric energy inside its body. Even a small shock makes it explode. (Silver, SoulSilver, Y)

It explodes in response to even minor stimuli. It is feared, with the nickname of “The Bomb Ball.” (FireRed, X)
