Lore

Biology

Escavalier is an insectoid knight, 1 m tall and 33 kg. A red horsehair crest and a visor top its head, round metal ridges sit on its shoulders, and its thin black arms end in red-striped points like jousting lances. Only its face and torso are uncovered, and its lower body is wrapped in a grey spiral shell with a red spike underneath, presumably a Shelmet's. The Pokédex says the steel armour protects its whole body.

Behaviour

Escavalier is brave and keeps facing opponents even when in trouble. The Pokédex says it flies about at high speed, jabbing with its spears, and charges enemies with its lances at the ready.

Habitat

Neither the Pokédex nor Bulbapedia names a natural habitat. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Abilities are Swarm and Shell Armor, which blocks critical hits, with Overcoat hidden, which guards against weather damage. It hits hard with Megahorn, X-Scissor and Iron Head. A base Attack of 135 is the highest of any Bug type introduced in Generation V, but a base Speed of 20 makes it very slow.

Name origin

Escavalier may combine escargot (French for snail) with cavalier or chevalier, and may also pun on Excalibur. The Japanese name is Chevargo (シュバルゴ), possibly from chevalier and escargot.

Design inspiration

Tomohiro Kitakaze designed Escavalier. It may draw on the Scaphinotus and Drilus genera of snail-eating beetles, with Drilus larvae said to pupate in shells they have taken, along with a jousting knight and perhaps a cuirass. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Escavalier evolves from Karrablast when Karrablast is traded for a Shelmet, and it does not evolve further.

In the games

Evolving a Karrablast is the only way to get an Escavalier in Black and White, where it debuted. It returns in Sword and Shield, and the Crown Tundra expansion adds it to Dynamax Adventures.

In the anime

Bianca's Escavalier evolved from Karrablast and at first refused to obey her; a tag battle against Ash and Cilan was arranged to win its trust.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Escavalier is the only Bug-type Pokémon ever on a winning Masters Division team at the Pokémon World Championships: Ray Rizzo's 2011 squad.
  • Medieval European manuscripts often show knights fighting snails, which Bulbapedia suggests may link Escavalier's knight look to its snail-hunting beetle roots.
  • In 'Movie Time! Zorua in "The Legend of the Pokémon Knight"!', an Escavalier stars in a film-within-the-show called Wonder Fighters, where it battles a Golurk.
