Lore
Biology
Gastly is a black sphere wreathed in purple haze, with a wide pink mouth, two fangs and eyes ringed by visible eyelids. It is 1.3 m tall and weighs just 0.1 kg. The Ultra Moon Pokédex says its body is 95% poisonous gas and the other 5% is said to be the souls of those the gas has killed. It gives off a faint, sweet smell, and its gas can make people faint.
Behaviour
Gastly drifts into abandoned buildings, where a flickering light is said to be a sign it is nearby. Groups huddle under the eaves of houses to shelter from the wind. In the anime it is playful and likes to scare people. A sleeping Gastly floats, and is said to give a sudden surprise to anyone who comes close.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat list puts Gastly in caves, and the Pokédex adds decrepit, deserted buildings. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Paldea and, in The Teal Mask, Kitakami. In Legends: Z-A it appears across Lumiose City, and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Its only Ability is Levitate. Gastly attacks with Lick, Night Shade, Shadow Ball and Dark Pulse, and Hypnosis sets up Dream Eater. With 100 base Special Attack and 80 Speed it hits hard and fast, but its 30 HP means almost anything can finish it.
Name origin
Gastly may combine 'gas', 'ghost' and 'ghastly', meaning frightful. The Japanese name is Ghos (ゴース), which may derive from 'ghost' and 'gas'.
Design inspiration
Ken Sugimori designed Gastly. Bulbapedia says it may draw on a cloud of poisonous gas and on hitodama or onibi, Japanese will-o'-the-wisp spirits. Its Poison type and extreme lightness could echo fuyūrei, floating spirits said to spread disease. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Gastly evolves into Haunter at level 25, and Haunter evolves into Gengar when traded.
In the games
Gastly's most notable game role is in the original Pokémon Pinball, where three of them open a bonus stage reached from the Red Table, followed by a pair of Haunter and then a Gengar. It is a Generation I original.
In the anime
Gastly debuted in 'The Ghost of Maiden's Peak', where a talking, shape-shifting one posed as the spirit of a legendary woman to toy with young men. Morty's Gastly beat Ash's Pikachu in 'From Ghost to Ghost' before Cyndaquil defeated it.
