Lore
Biology
Greavard is 0.6 m tall and weighs 35 kg. Long, shaggy pale grey hair reaches down to its legs, and a big snout with a black triangular nose peeks out from under it.
Behaviour
Greavard is friendly and does not like being alone. The Legends: Z-A Pokédex says it loves to romp and roughhouse, but that rubbing its fur against others absorbs their life force.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says Greavard lives in boreal mountains. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in West Province (Area Three), Dalizapa Passage and Glaseado Mountain, and in 1-star Tera Raid Battles.
Powers
Pickup lets it find items after battle, and its hidden Ability, Fluffy, halves contact damage but doubles damage from Fire moves. It uses Lick, Bite, Headbutt and Dig, and later Crunch, Play Rough and Phantom Force. With base Speed 34 and Attack 61 it is slow and gentle, best seen as a Houndstone in waiting.
Name origin
Greavard may combine 'graveyard', 'grieve', 'greaves' (a by-product of candle-making that was often fed to dogs) and Briard, a long-haired dog breed. The Japanese name is Bochi (ボチ), which may come from bochi ('graveyard'), Pochi (a typical pet dog's name in Japan) or hitoribocchi ('loneliness').
Design inspiration
Kazuyuki Kurashima designed Greavard and Houndstone. Greavard seems to be based mainly on the Catalan sheepdog, perhaps with some Briard or Komondor. Its habit of burying itself and popping up recalls the dead rising from graves, and the candle-like lump on its head may stand for a grave candle. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Greavard evolves into Houndstone when levelled up at night from level 30.
In the games
Players meet Greavard in West Province (Area Three), Dalizapa Passage and Glaseado Mountain in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted as number 311 in the Paldea Pokédex. In Legends: Z-A it appears in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose, in the 1-star and 4-star Ghost-type wild zones.
In the anime
Many Greavard debuted in 'Resonating Spirits in a Challenge to Ryme!', including one nicknamed DJ G-Rave, who comes back in the next episode.
