Lore

Biology

Mew is a small pink bipedal Pokémon with a wide snout, triangular ears, big blue eyes and a long thin tail. Its fur is so fine it only shows under a microscope. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 4 kg. The Pokédex says it holds the genetic makeup of all Pokémon, which is why it can use almost any move, and many scientists suspect it is the ancestor of them all. It can float, teleport and vanish at will.

Behaviour

Mew is playful and childlike, with signs of high intelligence, curiosity and shyness. The Pokédex says it apparently shows itself only to pure-hearted people who truly want to see it. In the anime it shields itself in a bubble of energy, copies other Pokémon, and even splits into several bodies at once. It has a fierce rivalry with its clone, Mewtwo.

Habitat

Canon is vague, and the Pokédex habitat list says rare. The Stadium and FireRed Pokédex entries call it a Pokémon of South America once thought extinct, and journals in the Pokémon Mansion say it was found deep in a jungle.

Powers

Mew can learn almost every TM, copies opponents with Transform, and uses Psychic and Metronome. Its Ability is Synchronize, and only Mew can use the Z-Move Genesis Supernova. With 100 in every base stat it can fill almost any role.

Name origin

Mew may combine 'mutant' or 'mutation' with 'new', and may involve the Japanese myō ('wonderful'). The French localiser Julien Bardakoff asked whether it came from a cat's 'meow' and was told firmly that it did not. The Japanese name is Mew (ミュウ).

Design inspiration

Shigeki Morimoto designed Mew, basing it on Mewtwo but simpler, so that it needed less room on the cartridge. It looks like a domestic cat with a jerboa's long back legs and tail, and its earliest sprite resembled a vertebrate embryo.

In the games

Mew was a secret in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan): Shigeki Morimoto slipped it in 2 weeks before the games were finished, after debugging, and even Nintendo did not know at first. It is obtained only through events and special gifts, such as Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl's Floaroma Town with Let's Go save data. In Scarlet and Violet it comes via Pokémon HOME or an event, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Mew fights its clone in 'Mewtwo Strikes Back', and a Mew guards the Tree of Beginning in 'Lucario and the Mystery of Mew'. In Pokémon Journeys a Mew first appears in a flashback in 'Enter Pikachu!' and becomes the Pokémon Goh dreams of catching.

Fun facts

  • Mew is the only one of the original 151 left out of the original Pokérap.
  • Mew shares the record for the shortest English Pokémon name with Muk.
  • It is the only Mythical Pokémon from Generation I.
  • Mew took 981 episodes to make its physical debut in the TV series (the films showed it long before), longer from the start of its generation than any other Pokémon so far.
  • In the first Super Smash Bros., Mew had a 1 in 151 chance of popping out of a Poké Ball; in Melee it was 1 in 251, matching the number of Pokémon then known.

Pokédex entries

When viewed through a microscope, this Pokémon's short, fine, delicate hair can be seen. (Yellow, Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

Mew is said to possess the genetic composition of all Pokémon. It is capable of making itself invisible at will, so it entirely avoids notice even if it approaches people. (Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire)

Its DNA is said to contain the genetic codes of all Pokémon, so it can use all kinds of techniques. (Silver, SoulSilver, Y)

Because it can use all kinds of moves, many scientists believe Mew to be the ancestor of Pokémon. (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Black, White, Black 2, White 2, X)

Apparently, it appears only to those people who are pure of heart and have a strong desire to see it. (Gold, HeartGold)

So rare that it is still said to be a mirage by many experts. Only a few people have seen it worldwide. (Red, Blue, LeafGreen)
