Pignite official artwork

Pignite is a Fire/Fighting-type Pokémon, the Fire Pig Pokémon, number 499 (#0499) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the Unova region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 55.5 kg.

Pignite is the Fire Pig Pokémon, a starter that fights on a full stomach: the Pokédex says every meal becomes fuel for the fire in its belly. Let it go hungry and it has no strength left at all.

How to pronounce Pignite

Pignite is pronounced pig-NITE. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Pignite said out loud:

In Japanese it is チャオブー (Chaoboo).

Lore

Biology

Pignite is a chubby, upright orange pig, 1 m tall and 55.5 kg, with brown bands around its shoulders, hands and snout, two pointed teeth poking up from its lower jaw and a swirled yellow design on its chest. The Scarlet Pokédex says its body temperature soars when it enters battle, until a scorching fireball wraps around it.

Behaviour

Pignite faces down any opponent, however strong, to protect its friends. As the fire inside it flares, its movements become sharper and faster. When it is in trouble, the Pokédex says, it emits smoke.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no wild habitat. Bulbapedia lists Pignite as something you normally get by evolving Tepig.

Powers

Its Abilities are Blaze and the hidden Thick Fat. In Scarlet and Violet it gets Arm Thrust on evolving, then Flame Charge at level 15, Flamethrower at 39 and Flare Blitz at 52. Base Attack of 93 and HP of 90 already make it hit harder than it looks.

Name origin

Pignite may combine 'pig' and 'ignite', and could also play on lignite, a low-grade coal. The Japanese name is Chaoboo [Chaobū] (チャオブー), which may blend Chinese chāo (super) or chǎo (stir-fry) with buta (pig) or bū (an oink).

Design inspiration

Pignite looks much like a pig in a wrestling singlet, Bulbapedia says, and the swirls on its chest resemble patterns on ancient Greek pottery. Its typing may nod to incendiary pigs, a form of ancient warfare reported by a few Greek military writers. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Pignite evolves from Tepig at level 17 and becomes Emboar at level 36. This is the stage where the Fighting type is added.

In the games

Pignite is the middle stage of the Fire starter of Unova. In The Indigo Disk and Legends: Z-A you evolve Tepig to get one, and in Legends: Z-A it also appears wild, but only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Bianca's Pignite debuted in 'Minccino-Neat and Tidy!'. Ash's Tepig evolved into a Pignite in 'Evolution by Fire!', in the middle of a battle with its former Trainer, Shamus.

Fun facts

  • Before the English names were revealed, fans used 'Pignite' as a nickname for Tepig, according to Bulbapedia.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Black renamed his Tepig, Tep, to Nite once it evolved, then called it Bo after it became an Emboar.
  • Two Trainers' Pignite joined the Wela Fire Festival crowd in the Alola episode 'A Crowning Moment of Truth!'.
