Probopass, the Compass Pokémon, is a Rock and Steel type with a mustache made of iron sand and three floating helper noses called Mini-Noses. The Pokédex says the main body mostly gives orders, while the Mini-Noses catch the prey.

Lore

Biology

Probopass is a rocky, mostly blue Pokémon, 1.4 m tall and 340 kg, with small round eyes, a big red nose and a bushy black mustache of iron sand. A large red magnet sits on its head like a hat. Three Mini-Noses hover at its sides and back, and the Pokédex says it controls them with magnetic force.

Behaviour

Using the Mini-Noses, Probopass can hit a target from three sides at once. The Pokédex warns they sometimes get lost and never come back. Its magnetic field is strong enough to make nearby electrical appliances useless, and Bulbapedia says it is seldom spotted in the wild.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat for Probopass. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives with The Teal Mask, by evolving Nosepass or in 5-star Tera Raids. It cannot be obtained in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Probopass has Sturdy and Magnet Pull, with Sand Force hidden, and the Pokédex says it forms stones from iron sand to smite its prey. It learns Tri Attack when it evolves, and later Power Gem and Zap Cannon. With 145 base Defense and 150 base Special Defense it is extremely tough, but its Speed is only 40.

Name origin

Probopass may combine 'probe' (for its remote Mini-Noses), 'proboscis' and 'compass'. The Japanese name is Dainose (ダイノーズ), which may combine dai ('big'), 'north' and 'nose', in contrast to Chibinose (チビノーズ), where chibi means 'small'.

Design inspiration

As with Nosepass, Probopass seems to be modelled on a moai statue and a compass, with iron filings forming the mustache. Its red hat may refer to the pukao, the reddish topknots that once sat on many moai. Bulbapedia notes that its big nose points north like a compass needle, with the Mini-Noses east, south and west. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Nosepass evolves into Probopass when it gains a level inside a special magnetic field, or, from Legends: Arceus onwards, when a Thunder Stone is used on it.

In the games

In Legends: Arceus Probopass can be found in the Coronet Highlands near the Primeval Grotto. It debuted in Diamond and Pearl.

In the anime

Alan's Nosepass evolved into Probopass in 'Nosing 'Round The Mountain!' near Mount Coronet, and Team Rocket briefly took control of it. In 'Trials and Determinations!', Olivia's Probopass fought Ash's Rockruff and Rowlet in the grand trial.

Fun facts

  • It is the only Pokémon that evolves with a Thunder Stone and is not an Electric type.
  • Its base Special Defense of 150 is the highest of any Generation IV Pokémon.
  • In HeartGold and SoulSilver there is no special magnetic field, so Nosepass could not evolve there, and Probopass had to be traded in from Diamond, Pearl or Platinum.
