Lore

Biology

Raging Bolt is a yellow, black-striped sauropod with cat-like features, a white underside lined with red, and a long neck. Bulbapedia describes seven tufts of hair on its head like a crown, a pair of long fangs and a thin blue tail ending in a spiky ball. A mane of dull purple clouds spreads over its back, and Bulbapedia says it can unfold into a normal-looking mane. Its claws point together and never retract.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says lightning flung from its fur is said to burn up everything nearby, and that little is known about this creature. Bulbapedia, citing the official site, says the lightning is rumoured to be strong enough to disintegrate any object.

Habitat

Canon gives no natural habitat. In The Indigo Disk it is found in Area Zero once you start Perrin's questline, and it is a Scarlet exclusive: Violet players must trade for it. It is number 237 in the Blueberry Pokédex.

Powers

Its Ability Protosynthesis raises its highest stat in harsh sunlight or when it holds Booster Energy. Its signature move Thunderclap strikes first with a jolt of electricity, but fails if the target is not readying an attack; only Raging Bolt learns it. It also learns Dragon Hammer, Discharge and Thunder. With 137 base Special Attack and 91 Defense it is a hard-hitting special attacker.

Name origin

Raging Bolt is literal. The Japanese name is Takeruraiko (タケルライコ), which can be read as takeru raiko, 'furious thunder drum', and may also nod to Raikou.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Raging Bolt is based on Raikou, designed by Muneo Saitō, blended with a sauropod such as Brontosaurus (whose name means 'thunder lizard') or Brachiosaurus, and with giraffe and storm-cloud features. Bulbapedia also suggests the qilin, the camelopard (an old word for giraffe) and the cryptid Mokele-mbembe, which would suit Paradox Pokémon being treated like cryptids. These are fan readings.

In the games

Raging Bolt arrived with The Indigo Disk as one of its Paradox Pokémon. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

  • Bulbapedia says it is the only Pokémon to learn Rising Voltage by levelling up, and it gets Electric Terrain at level 21, well before the move at level 63.
