Rattata

Rattata is a Normal-type Pokémon, the Mouse Pokémon, number 19 (#0019) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 3.5 kg.
Rattata is the Mouse Pokémon, a quick Normal type whose front teeth never stop growing, so it gnaws on everything to keep them short. The Pokédex says that spotting one means 40 more are certain to be living nearby.

Lore
Biology
Rattata is a small rodent, 0.3 m tall and 3.5 kg, with purple fur, a cream face, paws and belly, big front teeth and a long tail curled at the tip; females have shorter whiskers.
Behaviour
Rattata is cautious in the extreme and keeps its ears moving to listen for danger even while asleep. It breeds so quickly that a pair can soon take over an area. If its teeth grow too long it cannot eat, so without something to chew it gnaws on door frames and table legs.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat list says Grassland, and Bulbapedia says it settles almost anywhere that has food, even dirty places. In the games it is a common route Pokémon in Kanto and, in its Alolan form, in Alola.
Diet
Almost anything: the Gold Pokédex says it eats whatever it finds, and the Silver one says it scavenges all day.
Powers
Rattata learns Tackle, Quick Attack, Bite, Hyper Fang, Crunch and Sucker Punch, and has Run Away and Guts, with Hustle hidden. Alolan Rattata is a Dark and Normal type with dark grey fur: it reached Alola on cargo ships and turned nocturnal and urban to dodge the imported Yungoos, and has Gluttony, Hustle and the hidden Thick Fat.
Name origin
Rattata may combine 'rat' and 'attack', as its pre-release name Rattatak suggests, or echo 'rat-a-tat'. The Japanese name is Koratta (コラッタ), which may combine ko ('child' or 'small') and 'rat'.
Design inspiration
Rattata looks modelled on a rat or mouse. Alolan Rattata seems to be based on the black, brown or Polynesian rats that are invasive in Hawaii, and the mongoose brought in to control them explains the Yungoos link. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Rattata evolves into Raticate at level 20, but Alolan Rattata evolves into Alolan Raticate only at level 20 at night.
In the games
Rival Blue uses a Rattata in Cerulean City, and games often use one to teach catching, as in Yellow and the Johto games. It first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), and its Alolan form arrived in Sun and Moon. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Rattata debuted in 'Pokémon - I Choose You!', trying to steal food from Ash's backpack. Alolan Rattata and their Totem Raticate guarded a Darkinium Z from Team Rocket in 'A Team-on-Team Tussle!'.
