Lore

Biology

Shroodle is tiny, 0.2 m tall and 0.7 kg, with a round grey and white body, a black head that takes up about half of it, big yellow-green eyes and a single tuft of blonde hair. A long snout holds two large front teeth coated in purple poison. The Pokédex says a bite from them can leave the victim paralysed.

Behaviour

Shroodle is usually mellow, but it sinks its poisoned teeth into anything that angers it. It paints its territory with an acrid, poisonous liquid as a warning to enemies.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it marks the area around its nest. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South and East Provinces and in Tagtree Thicket, and Serebii lists forest and bamboo biomes.

Powers

Its Abilities are Unburden, which doubles its Speed after it uses or loses a held item, and Pickpocket, which steals the item of an attacker that touches it; the hidden Prankster raises the priority of its status moves. It learns Poison Fang, Acid Spray, Switcheroo, Knock Off, Poison Jab and Gunk Shot. With 75 base Speed and 40 base HP it is a quick, fragile trickster.

Name origin

Shroodle may combine 'shrew', 'shrewd' and 'doodle'. The Japanese name is Shirushrew (シルシュルー), which may blend shiru ('juice'), shirushi ('mark') and 'shrew'.

Design inspiration

Shroodle may take after the Iberian shrew or the Pyrenean desman, and its poisonous bite fits the fact that some shrews are among the few venomous mammals. Its snout, and its evolution into an aye-aye-like Pokémon, may also point to treeshrews, which are close relatives of primates. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Shroodle evolves into Grafaiai at level 28.

In the games

Shroodle is a wild Pokémon and a 1-star Tera Raid Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. In Legends: Z-A it appears in the Mega Dimension DLC, in the Normal-type and Poison-type wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Shroodle debuted in Pokémon Horizons as a wild Pokémon in 'An Unexpected Picnic!'. Two wild ones return in 'Welcome to Naranja Academy!'.

Fun facts

  • According to Bulbapedia, it is the only Pokémon with Pickpocket as a standard Ability rather than a Hidden Ability.
  • Bulbapedia says its overall shape, together with Grafaiai's graffiti theme, may be a nod to 'Kilroy was here', a well-known piece of graffiti.
  • Bulbapedia also floats the shrew tenrecs of Madagascar as an influence, since tenrecs lick their paws and spread saliva around their territory to scent-mark it.
